Q: How do I update the firmware on my external hard drive with a USB connection?
A: It is not supported or recommended to attempt to update the firmware while connected via a USB, eSATA or FireWire interface. We only recommend the update while connected through a SATA interface.
Q: When will there be a firmware update for my hard drive?
A: Firmware updates are now available. See Knowledge Base Article 207931 for instructions on determining if your drive is affected and if a firmware update is necessary.
Q: What if the firmware updating utility doesn't detect my drive while it is connected to a regular SATA controller?
A: Try switching the controller mode to Enhanced, or IDE, mode and try again. If problems continue, please see answer #3 above or contact Seagate Technical Support for assistance.
Q: Can I update the firmware while my drive is connected to a RAID controller?
A: Customers utilizing RAID architectures incorporating affected products should back up all data content before upgrading drives with the firmware solution. For some arrays firmware upgrades may cause RAID management software to require the array to be rebuilt. Please consult the technical documentation and procedure recommended by the RAID controller manufacturer for your system prior to upgrading any affected product in an array. Please proceed with caution and contact Seagate Technical Support for assistance.
