Ok, but it still looks like all he's done is removed the drive letter and made that part of the drive unreadable, in much the same way that ppl delete partitions using the wrong methods, if I'm wrong then I'm wrong, but had he followed my advice his data would be on another drive by now and his main drive could then be looked into to see if it's faulty or not or just O/S damage, the fact it boots says there's nothing wrong with the actual drive, and once again those diagnostic programs are being trusted as god, which as we all know you can test a brand new drive and it will still say it's got bad sectors, reason being is they want you to buy the portion of the program that magically repairs it for you, I'll leave you to carry on with it Fza, but if he wants to get out of the house sometime this year, my method would be the best solution.
