HD won't spin up. Help please! Can't find solution...

Hello,

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 1,5 Tb pluged into an external case, and it isn't turning on. And this is a very recent problem (in december 2010 it was functioning normally)... I already tested it in other external cases, and even pluged it inside my computer, with no solutions (other hard drives I have, identical to that, work normally in these cases). I am very worried because I have very important data inside it (of a video I am about to finish...!). :smileysad:

I read a lot of messages in this forum and other foruns, but I couldn't find the same problem I am facing, or a good solution. The HD tries to turn on, but it won't get there - it doesn't make anymore that typical "meat grinder" sound. Here is the exact sound it makes, as I recorded.

I don't have money to send to data recovery companies... please, someone help me! What do I do? Put in the freezer? Open it to adjust some pieces (what pieces?)? Shake it? Help!

(I do understand a little about computer, as I assembled my own computer and already used data recovery programs)

-> Looking for a reason for the problem, I remembered that reccently I dropped it on the floor - but it was already on the floor, it was just in the vertical position and fell apart for the horizontal position. And after this it worked for a while... it was the only thing that happened.

Ok, lets start at the beginning,

You had it on the floor standing up and it tipped over flat?

Is it clacking when you try to power it, or is it simply dead with no spin vibration?

Look at the green board underneath, is there any visible damage?

Don't put it in the freezer, and don't spin it again until you've replied to these questions.

Can you do pictures of the green board so we can see if there's anything obvious you've missed, post them up if you can.

To inspire you a bit, it might just be Windows is not recognising it, in which case i think I can help you there as well, as long as the drive is spinning up.

Just had a listen to your sample, it sounds like it could be jammed, there is a solution to that as well iirc, but I won't suggest it just yet until I can get Fza's opinion on it, just hold tight we will help you get it going if it's physically possible.
