Hi,
When I turned on computer a message from S.M.A.R.T. appeared, which said that my hard disk drive is in bad condition. Then I pressed the F1 (or something like that) and computer went to that Windows 7 sign and after few seconds it rebooted. After reboot it just got to the message on black screen which said: Insert proper device etc. (or something like that). I did that a few times and always the same.
I inserted disk in another computer, and BIOS sees the HDD. But in the Windows XP on my computer doesn't. The icon for HDD in my computer appeared eventually when I go to Control panel > Add Hardware > yes I have already connected hardware and searched for broken HDD. Then I ticked refresh in my computer icon and the HDD appeared. But when I clicked on the icon the computer freezed. I did that a few times and always the same. ![]()
The HDD is making some sounds when computer is trying to search on it, but this is not a typical clicking. I also changed SATA and power cables.
Is there any hope to save some data? I just worked with 1 document for the past 10 days and didn't make backup....

If smart is tripped and it's making noises it's dead, is the noise like a scrape rather than a click or clack.

Yes it scratches when it spins the first time when it is plugged in power. After a while connected via USB to computer it makes usual sounds for hard disk...
I connected HDD to USB and the computer sees it. But when i clicked on the icon in my computer the icon said: "The disk drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" At least the computer doesn't freeze when HDD is connected this way.
Any hope?

You can try formatting it, but if it scraping then it's a good sign it's dying.
