I DELL 2350 DESK TOP THAT IS HOKED UP TO A SEA GATE U6 MODEL ST380020A 80 GB . JUST RECENTLY A PROBLEM WITH POWERING UP THE COMPUTER AND IT SHUTTING DOWN   AFTER WINDOWS BOOTS UP AND THAN STARTS BACK UP OVER AND OVER . . BIOS READS THE HDD DRIVE AND THERE IS NOTHING TELLING WHAT THE ISSUE IS . THE HDD DOOES NT SHOW ING ANY SIGNS OF BURNED UP . IT HAS BEEN WORKING FINE UNTIL NOW . THE HDD SOUND S IF IT WANTS TO WORK BUT IS HUNG UP ,SOME THING KEEPING IT FROM WANTING TO SPIN . WHAT SHOULD I DO OR TO TO KICK INTO GEAR . THE HDD IS STILL IN GERAT SHAPE . LOOKIN FOR SOLUTION BEFORE I BUY AND HDD.

are you sure drive is spin up with normal sound? and you should replace new drive if don't have important data in it. as this drive very old already.

 It would sound like an O/S fault tbh.

You should try booting in safe mode 1st, if you can get in through that update all drivers, or remove the last software/hardware you loaded to the drive, if that fails and you have XP or later on it, do a system restore by using the XP set up disc and boot from it and tell the PC to do a restore when prompted.

Other than that it's going to be a hardware issue, favorites are burned out PSU and memory/cards not seated properly or dirty contacts, if you want to clean them, gently use a pencil eraser on the gold contacts. hth.

Boot from your Windows XP installation CD and execute the CHKDSK command from the Recovery Console.

If your drive has bad sectors, then make a note of them.

If you suspect a RAM problem, then test the memory with memtest:

WELL THANKS FOR NOTHING AS A PERSON MAY HAVE AN OLD DRIVE BUT IS GOOD AS NEW . WHY WASTE MONEY ON SOMETHING THAT CAN BE FIXED . AS FOR OS PROBLEM NO ITS THE POWER BUTTON ITS SELF THANK FOR NOTHING.

Do you realise how ungrateful you sound in that last post, you may not realise this but myself and the other's who have tried to help you blind (as we can't see and you didn't say the power button was broke) do not get paid to help out nor work for Seagate, and as it seems it was a case of a broken button on the case I suggest you go to their support site and abuse the users over there with rude capitals, as broken case buttons aren't the cause of HDD faults, and last time I looked Seagate don't make PC cases.

Oh and btw, you're first post says it tries to work, so that ain't no power button issue, what you've done is either corrupted the O/S or have a virus on it, what you are experiencing is an O/S looking for something that is no longer available, like running out of gas in a car,or you've played about with the bios and it's not set up to run your drive anymore, anyway thx for the thx, I like being shouted at after work, please don't do aid work in future, you'll be blaming ppl for natural disasters within minutes of arriving.
