Re: HDD locked enter password (5 left)

Try the full erase with SeaTools for DOS

Of course, that will erase the data on the drive.

This is probably a symptom of a failed drive, sorry.

Re: HDD locked enter password (5 left)

What does HDAT2 tell you?
http://www.hdat2.com/

The "5 left" is telling you that you have 5 guesses before you will be locked out. However, you only need to power cycle the drive and you can try again.

There is a commercial product that will remove passwords:

Repair Station:
http://hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/

HDD Unlock Wizard will remove your password, but will also erase your data.

[ Edited ]

Check the bios isn't password protected 1st, if it is clear cmos with either the jumper or take the battery out, this will sort that out, if it isn't then a format should remove the problem, there are as said programs to unlock codes, but I've yet to see a free one.

Re: HDD locked enter password (5 left)

Just for illustration purposes, here is a solution, but it requires a serial cable, and is for a different model family (which means that the terminal commands may have unpredictable results).

SEAGATE: Non Standard ATA Master Password:
http://forum.hddguru.com/seagate-non-standard-ata-master-password-t12920.html

The serial cable can be constructed as in the following guides:
http://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix/

Pinout of Nokia CA-42 cable's Pop-port connector (use pins 6,7,8):
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-Nokia/nokia_pop_pinout.shtml

SeDiv - HDD Seagate Terminal for Windows can be obtained here:
http://sediv2008.narod.ru/Easy1014.rar (software)
http://sediv2008.narod.ru/Help.rar (documentation)

@ fza

Don't send him down that route, get the simples out of the way 1st, I'm 99% certain all thats happened is the bios password has been set, or if it's the Windows one and he didn't do it somethinbg else did, so he'd be best off flushing his O/S anyway, if none of that works then it's time to get techy with it, but I think it's a simple mistake instruction thats caused it, and a wipe will resolve it.

Yes, I think it's a pretty good rule of thumb to start with the easiest/simplest solution and move progressively to the more difficult ones.  Thanks to everyone!

Re: HDD locked enter password (5 left)

A methodical approach is my cardinal rule. :-)

However, in this case I've seen the same problem at HDD Guru, and Google searches suggest that the drive is locked by an ATA password.

For example, here are two similar cases where the password is stored on the drive, outside the user area:

No external drives found on Seagate Freeagent Desk

Seagate Freeagent Desk unpluged USB when attaching again Seagate Says "No external drives are found."  Have checked the

drives and they are all healthy.  Maybe I have been locked out of the drive and if so how do I unlock the drive and especially as

I don't know the password.  Zel
