How do I transfer contents of old hard drive to new computer?

I had a old e-machine with the following internal hard drive installed:-

Seagate Ultra ATA u seeries 9 80 Gbytes model ST3800`1A

80 - conductor

I need to buy a caddy or something to install it into that has usb connectivity to transfer it over but as this is an ATA drive can someone tell me what I should get please?

Also, will it read the whole contents of the hard drive including the programmes so I can transfer absolutely everything?

someone told me you can only access your documents, files, music and pictures

It all depends on how you get the data onto the hard drive that you'll have put in the USB caddy.

Here is how to get the whole C: drive transferred over to the USB caddy - http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=202211&NewLang=en

Give a hoot. Backup your data on a second storage media.

Simply undo the PC case, set the drive to slave mode with the jumper and use a spare power plug in the case to power the drive and connect the drive to an existing ide ribbon, transfer the data, and after put it all back as it was, or you could leave it in as a storage drive, hth.

Re: How do I transfer contents of old hard drive to new computer?

Sorry too complicated for me.

I have the hard drive out of the old computer.  I just want to know what sort of enclosure of caddy to buy.

I am confused by the sizes quoted as mine measure 4" across and they sell 2.5" or 3.5"?

I need something that will plug and play without too much trouble.

That is worth looking into  but I need ot know what kind of enclosure/caddy to buy so I do not waste money.

If mine measures 4" across  why does the largest enclosure say 3.5"?

Thanks for the advice

[ Edited ]

That's a 3.5 mate, and make sure it's an ide one if it's an ide drive, sata if it's sata, so if it's got a L shaped connector for the sata lead and power hook, it'll ba a sata drive, or yeel be a runnin back and forth to tha shop :smileywink:

Re: How do I transfer contents of old hard drive to new computer?

Right 3.5" IDE ATA Hard Drive enclosure/caddy powered via. USB should do it then.

Just hope I can get all my files and maybe programme off it and will try the previous answer for that.

Many thanks All
