Re: I killed my ST31000333AS, or at least its controller card

Btw, fzabkar, i found out that my local electronic store (farnell) sells SMAJ5.0A. They are manufactured by BOURNS and the specs are shown below:

Manufacturer: BOURNS

Order Code: 1815150

Manufacturer Part No: SMAJ5.0A

RoHS :  Yes

Description: Diode

Reverse Stand-Off Voltage, VRWM: 5V

Breakdown Voltage Range: 6.4V to 7V

Diode Configuration: Unidirectional

Diode Case Style: DO-214AC

No. of Pins: 2

Power Dissipation, Pd: 400W

Could this BOURNS SMAJ5.0A diode be a substitute?

Thank you fzabkar

Yes, that's it. Just make sure you line up the stripe on the diode with the "v" on the board.

Re: I killed my ST31000333AS, or at least its controller card

Hello,

I have a burnt tvs 12v diode too. I would like to ask something before i proceed. Do i need to connect those two points with wire when i desolder the diode? Or i just remove it from the circuit?

Thanks

hpanagis, you should just remove the diode. Do not bridge it with a wire. Just be absolutely certain that your power supply is good, as you will no longer have overvoltage protection on the +12V rail.

Thanks fzabkar! I figured it out a min after i posted. I removed the part and the disk now is working again. I will backup the data and use it as a backup disk only.

Thanks again!

See this article:
http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

The 12V TVS diode is the larger of the two circled items, the other is the 5V diode.
