Maxtor 160GB SMT316081AS Drive Experiencing Restart Without Any Warning

Hi.

I have a Maxtor 160GB Serial ATA and my OS is Windows XP without Nvidia Raid. My windows xp is currently updated with all the latest hotfixes and updates that are available at the moment. The Drive has been giving me some problems lately when ever I stay on the computer while surfing the web or just watching some shows and listening to some MP3's music. It has been Restarting without any kind of warnings and no logs have been established nor has there been any bsod's. Now, I have downloaded and burned the SeaTools.iso to cd-r and booted into the Tool and ran a Short Test which came back with a successful completion. I also ran SpinRite6 which came back with no error as well. Is there any kind of solution that will stop this occurance from happing.

System specs:

ECS KN1Sli Lite Rev 1.0a (939)
AMD X2 4600+ Dual Core
2GB Kingston Hyper X Ram

Re: Maxtor 160GB SMT316081AS Drive Experiencing Restart Without Any Warning

I was wondering if you ever found a solution to your problem. I just installed a 160GB PATA in a friends computer, and it's now rebooting every 30 minutes. We know it's the new Seagate drive, because we put the old one back in, and the problem goes away.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Maxtor 160GB SMT316081AS Drive Experiencing Restart Without Any Warning

I wanted to add some additional information about this problem, in case someone else see this an has any ideas. We have tried just about everything to figure out why this drive is causing reboots. Scandisk comes up clean, the 30 minute reboot interval should be a clue, but I don't know what the significance is, there is nothing in the power settings with a 30 minute timeout. I just burnt a copy of SeaTools, and I will run that on my friends machine as soon as I can get back over there. This is a brand new drive purchased from NewEgg, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815A 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive. We imaged his old drive to this new one, all looked good, I headed home. Soon after getting home, he calls about this 30 minute reboot problem. Putting the old drive back in eliminates the  problem, any ideas anyone?

One last thing, here is the text of the error, he was able to get this after I had him disable automatic reboot on bluescreen error, didn't tell me much, not even a file name to work with. Perhaps someone else can make some sense of this.

<begin paste of error>

The system has recovered from a serious error.

Re: Maxtor 160GB SMT316081AS Drive Experiencing Restart Without Any Warning

does your motherboard support sata 2?  if so, remove the jumper
if not, make sure the jumper is on

update your motherboard sata drivers

run seatools for dos on the drive

-techno-doulos kuriou
-if you didn't back up your junk, you didn't need it after your drive crashed

In my earlier post, I stated that this is PATA drive, not SATA.

I am planning to run SeaTools when I get back over to his house. Thanks  for taking the time to reply.

The model number you gave is for a SATA drive, not a PATA drive.
Do us a favor and doublecheck the model number and interface.

OK, here's the description right from the invoice, I thought that's where I got the information from on my first post, obviously not! Thanks for correcting me.
