Maxtor DiamondMax23 - Clicking Noise

Hi guys, yesterday, my 6month or so old Maxtor DiamondMax23 started Clicking ALOT! of which I purchased a new HDD and started backing all my data, thinking I will do a RMA. However after doing the backup, I thought before sending this off for RMA, let me format the disk, as there is sensitive information on it. After doing the format the clicking stopped. Now I am not sure whether to RMA it or not?

Please test it with SeaTools for DOS.

Should be able to, you don't have to use Seatools anyway, there are plenty of freeware proggy's that will report the drives condition, personally I've a feeling that either your power lead wasn't in properly, or the psu or lead isn't pushing a constant supply through, as it now works ok in the dock which has it's own power, it would suggest a power issue, if you have one of those unbranded grey generic jobbies this won't help run a stable system, good food leads to good energy levels :smileywink:

Hope you get it sorted and good luck with it.

I suspect that a marginal sector may have been reallocated, ie replaced with a spare, during the formatting process.

Try a comprehensive SMART diagnostic. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):

HDDScan for Windows:
