Barracuda XT, Barracuda, Barracuda Green, DiamondMax and other desktop SATA and IDE drives

I set this drive up under XP and used disk wizard to enable using the rest of the drive. I now dual boot with an install of 7, but it won't see the special partition created under XP to enable full capacity.

How can I make that extra partition visible under 7 - 64bit?

Is there some way to install that special driver in 7 ?

Install Discwizard on the 7 partition, then simply enable the extra 750GB's in Discwizard, you should install Intel RST drivers as well, links for downloads are in my 3TB sticky at the top of the threads, hth.

That would seem to be a reasonable expectation, but in windows 7 Disk Wizard does not show that partition at all.

Also it is an AMD set.

Ah, ok AMD, well that rules the RST out, in Wizard you do this

1 - Launch

2 - Extended Capacity Manager

3 - Should now have the option to set a ext partition.

If this doesn't work open the blue ? icon and read the helps, if none of this works maybe Discwizard isn't XP friendly, there are 2 versions of it btw, make sure you get the V13 one, the link is in my set up thread.

It was not a problem with XP. It added that extra part quite nicely. The problem is in windows 7. When I fire the wizard up, there is no option which would add that driver used under XP. That is why I asked about adding that to 7.

The other possibility is to remove it from the XP and use the ASUS driver for beyond 2 TB. So if I knew how to do that it would be helpful also.

I can't help with the Asus thing as I never use their stuff tbh, it would make sense that an XP instruction set can't be read by 7 and this is why it's not happening, if this is the case you are going to have to pick a side regarding on which machine you want the full capacity to appear, there is an option is Discwizard to delete the partition but if you have an O/S on it it will probably make it unbootable afterwards.

Trouble is XP is 2002 and 7 is 2009 and 7 years in the world of PC's is a long time and when Vista launched it wasn't an XP upgrade it was a full re-think.

Real cure is a UEFi bios, but that means a new board if you don't already have one, the only other thing I think may work is 3 partitions, one boot and 2 extended ones if the drive is needed to be bootable, and then set one partition up in XP and the other in 7, can't say for sure if it will work as I've never had cause to try it, personally i'd throw XP away now, it was fantastic when it was fantastic, but now the new kid is around it's more hassle than it's worth unless you have software that isn't supported past XP you need to use still, my mum is one, she has a knitting proggy for 98, she won't let me update her PC simply because of this program, and the thing is obselete now anyway, but cos she paid X amount for it before my hair started greying she has to get her full value out of it.

So, if you really need XP try doing the 3 parts, if not ditch it and stay on 7. hth.

That  version of Diskwizard did it. I have to wonder why it was not the offered version. That driver installed and everything was happy, for awhile.

This is new MOBO with UEFI BIOS.

Unfortunately I have some hardware that does not like 7, or vice versa.

And office XP apparently has issues. Some functions removed from 7 and one of those works with clippit in office. I downloaded it from MS and the whole system did not seem to like it.

Late last night, system would not come out of hiber. I may have some major issue because bios kept losing the boot drive from menu. Seemed like my new SSD was dieing. I did eventually get it to hold long enough to try to boot win 7 and then it came up with system problems leading to a system restore which seems to have worked.

A new one to me, it removed downloads from my download folder. That has always been a protected folder just like favorites.

I have been using EasyBCD to boot systems, but that also seems to have a kink because I don't have the AHCI drivers for SATA under XP. Two ports can be switched to IDE with the others remaining and moving XP boot drive to them may fix.

Rather expensive to upgrade everything just because of 7.
