Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

[ Edited ]

My 4 month old 1TB drive has failed. It started flaking out about a day ago and now my mobo is not recognizing it, windows wont boot with it plugged in. This drive was EXTREMELY important to me, it held all my video editing projects and media, some irreplaceable data. I absolutely need this data at all costs my income depends on it. I'm about to cry. .*(

P/N: 98x158-303
Firmware: SD15
Date: 09086
Site: KRATSG

After reading the reviews on Newegg.com see: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822148274

It has come to my attention that this is a reoccurring problem and many others are having this drive fail on them! This is outrageous. How could they sell such products?

"Don't make the mistake of not reading the reviews before you make the purchase. I read them after and saw the many reviews about the drive dead on arrival or dying when you get the one that ships from thailand. I tried my luck, and the drive worked great for about 3 months. It just died two nights ago randomly while I was writing a sorting program for one of my college courses' final project. I lost half the project!!! The drive died while I was sorting 100,000,000 integers with bubble sort!!!! HAHA. Anyway, don't think that you'll be lucky and get a non-malfunctioning one, look for a different drive."

I build computers for a living and took all the proper troubleshooting routes to determine that it is the drive at fault.

If it is something as simple as the actual board and not the internal drive parts, could this be repaired? I have about 500gb of data on this drive.

Does anyone have any information on what part is exactly failing on these drives?

Re: Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

u know that all drives do fail, right?

its kind of a matter of luck whether one's particular drive fails or doesn't...

sure there are "many" drives that die, and if you go to newegg, you might see, what, several dozen complaints?  and there are how many of thse 00s of 1000s of these drives out on the market?

Funny, I've been working with HDD's for 11 years, and have only had three fail on me. NONE of them were 3 1/2 months old mind you. Moreso, to search online for the very same model and find out that a LARGER THAN NORMAL amount of people have been getting DOA's and failed drives in the 2-4 month span, tells even a preschool student that something is not very right.

Thanks for your insight though!:smileyvery-happy:

Papadenadia, quit replying with unhelpful posts.  Read the other threads on this forum.

Re: Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

The 1TB drive failue is a very widespread problem. There are many threads from many forums (not just the Seagate forum) regarding this particular issue. I'm going to make a little summary below.

1) The problem is BIOS no detect after a few months of usage (typically 3 months)

2) This problem applies to, ST31000340as, SD15, Thailand, Seagate 1TB drive

3) There are also problems for Segate 1.5TB, 640GB and 500GB. The 1.5TB drive's problem seems to be fixed by the newer firmware. The problems are a bit different from the 1TB SD15 problem (those drives didn't die completely).

4) Until today, Segate denied there is problem with SD15 1TB drive. SD15 is still the newest firmware.

5) If you RMA today, you are likely to get the bad drive again which is likely to fail another 3 months later. That's why I haven't RMA it yet.

6) Calling them you will get no help because they haven't acknowledge this problem offically yet.

7) Email them and you won't get any response.

8) This problem is very widespread (go to any place that sells this drive and with a online forum, you will see what I meant. e.g. newegg, ncix, amazon)

9) The previous firmware SD14 has some performance issues. But I haven't heard of any dramatic failure for that version (Some Dead on arrival, but those are "normal"). By fixing the performance issue, SD15 introduced some serious bug. I suspect it's 100% failure after about 3 months of usage, but there's no way to verify this claim.

10) "Papadenadia" is probably just "Hamartolos" in disguise, who I suspected is the alter ego of this forum's moderator AlanM. But again, I've no way to verify this accusation. It's possible I'm accusing the innocent (unless this post got deleted or modified without my consent).

11) In most of the cases (applying only to no detect issue), the data are recoverable, but you have to pay for the recovery service. I haven't heard of any free solution yet.

12) Switching the PCB doesn't work.

13) No software solution I have heard of.

14) In most cases, the drive is still intact. No abnormal "clicking" sound (if it does, it's a different issue).

15) At the time of my purchase (August), there was no negative posting regarding this issue. There were a few "Dead on Arrival", but like I said, those happened to all drives.

16) The earliest complaints regarding this issue I've seen is around late October. It's more frequent in December (someone who has more time than me may want to do a more scientific count). So this problem is just starting to surface.

Thanks for the summary.

I have had mine from tigerdirect.com since mid-nov 08 and no problems yet. this firmware problem is starting to show up online in other blogs like zdnet

Re: Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

I've had 2 ST3100340AS 1TB drives (out of 5) die on me. One was DOA (no problem), the other was 3 months of use, no strange noises, sounds like its working fine. 3 different computers do not recognize it. Firmware SD15, Made in Thailand.  I have 4 more that I'm now worried about.

Re: Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

Has there been any further updates on these problems?  Is there a possible fix?  Unfortunately, I was in the middle of cleaning up several drives and consolidating data when my st31000340as 1TB  died and I had not had time to set up a backup yet.  I have a lot of data on the drive and would really like to get it back without having to go to a data company to do it.  Could it be as simple as changing out the controller board from a similar drive as a fix?  They are only around $100 at Newegg.

My drive was part of a One Touch backup system.

Re: Official st31000340as 1TB barracuda epic fail thread.

Well, it looks like I'm joining a big club. I have a 340AS 1Tb hard drive which is now failing to be recognised in BIOS after....what a surprise 3-4 months of less than average use. It had 750GB of data which I now fear I will lose.

I have sent a support ticket to Seagate but it looks like I should not expect a reply, nor do I have faith in any replacement.

Has NO ONE managed to get their data back? Is it worth sending to a data recovery company? Can anyone recommend one in the UK?

Back to Western Digital for me. Waste of money on this drive though.
