Cheaper for one for another I have never had a Seagate drive fail on me in about 20 years of playing around on PC's, which is more than I can say for any other brand. So when making that decision last night you talk of I bought the 1.5tb model and downloaded the firmware .iso in case it is needed so I can apply it before even formatting the drive ...

has anyone come to a resolution regarding this issue? I tried what seagate said on their website about updating the firmware (went from SD15 to SD1A), but now when i boot up my bios tells me that the drive is "bad, backup and replace." When i force it to boot to the drive, the HDD hangs and I'm unable to access any of the files. seems like upgrading the firmware didn't do jack

for reference, i'm using a seagate ST3750330AS, and have had the same problems that everyone here has been saying: drive was running fine for a month or so, started showing some weird behavior, then finally bricked

If your HD was bricked because of the bug in the old SD15 firmware then you can't fix it alone. You have to take it to a specialist or Seagate to recover data or flash it. Yoiu can onlyupgrade firmware to SD1A on hard drives BEFORE they get bricked.

I have 3 ST31000340AS's running SD15 that so far have not failed, likley because they are in a server that isn't often power cycled. Ive burned the firmware update to a disc and am getting ready to update the drives. I read the readme.txt that says to unhook any other SATA ot PATA drives that are not getting updated, but Im wondering should I update the three dives 1 at a time, or can I just leave the three that need to be updated all hooked up and do them all at once?

I believe the recommendation is to do them one at a time, with ONLY the disc in question plugged in.

I just got off the phone with tech support, after nearly excatly an hour of holding, and he said to update them 1 at a time if you have more than 1 of the drives needing update in the same system.

Hi, i'm still contemplating on whether to flash my still functional HD ST31000340AS SD15 to the new one... Will the new firmware prevent my HD from Bricking? Also when i do decide to flash it, i have a SATA optical drive, will it affect the process? thanks - seagate fanboy

The new firmware will (hopefully) remove the possibility of your drive bricking itself.

There is no guarantee that it will brick if left with SD15, and none that it won't.

Whether to apply the new firmware or not is a decision you have to make, but for peace of mind, backing up anything important is recommended.  For those of us whose drives became bricked, it was an easier decision to make :-)

You should be fine with the SATA optical drive if you've had no problems booting from it.

What about the 0MB cache issue? I too have 4 of these drivers on a server that is rebooted every month or so, and have been thinking whether it is now safe to use the firmware update. Are all issues solved?
