PS3 not recognizing Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS

Hi all.  I just bought and received the Seagate Momentus ST9500325AS 500gb hard drive to upgrade my PS3.  The install went fine and the PS3 formatted the drive.  Once it rebooted however, I now get the error message: "Cannot start.  Could not find correct hard drive."  I was able to get the drive to boot up after restarting a few times, but then the error message came back on a subsequent reboot.

Anyone else have this problem with the drive?

Re: PS3 not recognizing Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS

UPDATE:  Well after getting past the setup screens on the PS3, the drive seems to be working fine.  After doing more research online, I've found this problem happening to a few people.  It seems like it's on the PS3 end.  Sometimes the PS3 doesn't identify the drive, but so far so good on my end *knock on wood*.

Re: PS3 not recognizing Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS

Hi,

I have the exact same drive in my PS3.  You can jumper it to limit the speed to 1.5Gb/sec to improve the detection rate.  You'll need a 2mm jumper, and the pins to jumper are described in section 3.2 of the manual : http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/notebook/momentus/5400.6%20(Wyatt)/100528359...

However, I am finding this drive incredibly slow (with or without the jumper).  Much much slower than the original 60Gb drive.  In fact, too slow even to record anything on PlayTV...!

Re: PS3 not recognizing Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS

Thanks for the info Rob.  I actually sent that drive back for a smaller 320gb SATA 1.5 one.  It's a Samsung and most people seem to be happy with it.  It seems like the Seagate drive I had is slow, even after people have changed the jumper like you.  I originally wanted to go with Seagate seeing how that's the drive that is in the stock PS3, but at the same time I want one that runs about the same speed as the original too :-).  I'll post my results with the Samsung once I get it installed.

I was unable to solve the performance problems so sent the Seagate back and got a Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Blue instead.  This drive seems to behave much better than the Seagate.  The WD detects straight away and doesn't insist on parking its heads every few seconds like the Seagate does.
