Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

Any drive will lag if it's being woken up, that's normal, hold on Adam I hope to have some positive news this week.

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

I am having the lag problem with the chirping noise while in the middle of playing games that should constantly be accessing the drive.

Drive is ST30000DM001

I am also having issues even updating the firmware from CC9C through either the ISO or the Windows file.....

Error messages both times.

:smileysurprised:(

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

Ok, I was able to get the firmware updated through the ISO disc at least.

For some reason the drive when plugged into my Marvel 9128 controller would not update, so I switched it to one of the Intel controllers and it updated. Not sure why but at least it worked.

Of course as soon as the computer started up again the drive chirped so.... :smileysad:

Hello,

I ve just bought 2 of those drives to make RAID0 array and first i thought 1 of them or both are failing on arrival but then i ve foudn this threa and it appears that this sound is that APM feature. IT is really annoying ... What is the purpose to put such feature on always on without an option to turn it off permamently for a DESKTOP ???? Really please seagate add that option...

Forgot to mention - i use CC4H firmware...

Anyway, Write to Your mobo manufacters to include the option to disable APM in the new bios --- maybe they will be faster then seagate to ease our pains...

I support! The producer should make possibility of shutdown of APM in new BIOS! These sounds irritate!

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

I have 2 of the ST3000DM001 with firmware CC9E made in China April 2012. They are installed in my media server. Would disable the APM have any impact on the performance or reliability of the drives?  Would updating the firmware help in any way.

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

I can't offer an opinion on whether disabling APM would have an impact on reliability, but I can say that your CC9E firmware is a later version than that which is currently available for download from Seagate (CC9D). In fact, at the time of this writing, there is a benign bug in the CC9D update package that prevents the firmware from being applied to any drive.

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

Thanks fzabkar for your reply.

Given the date of manufacture of my drives, it seems like they already have the latest firmware. Anyway the newer CC4H firmware did not seem to fix anything.

My APM on the Seagate is set at 128, factory default. I know that hdparm has an option -Z which disable Seagate auto-powersaving mode. But I don't know why Seagate has the APM set at 128 which can produce the clicking sound, head parking problem etc... in the assumption that power saving is better than reliability. Of course, in the enclosure, the ST3000DM001 run hot, so that may be another reason for setting APM to on.

I have my Seagates in a Linux server and I do have the clicking sound, but I am a bit uneasy about outsmarting the Seagate engineers.

Re: Permanently disable APM on ST1000DM003

I have a St1000DM003-9yn162 with firmware CC4D... problems with chirping  sound and high load cycle count issue. If I past time without start computer, hours or days, in first power on start Hd in Ahci mode, fail to boot Windows 7 system, Then I power off computer, wait 5 seconds, press again start and then Windows 7 init without problems... This problem Coold Boot is cause by Apm problems?.

Time ago, I buyed two 500 Gbs and two 1Tb Seagate 7200.11..... infamous Hd Seagate Serie. Need recover 3 with update firmware... Computers no detect hard disk, very bad performance,  re-live again with firmware updates and better performance, but nothing impresive......

Now this ST1000DM003 with this chirping problem sound and high load cycle counts... problems Apm....  And my firmware is CC4D, and no possible update to CC4H....... , no luck with last buyed Seagate Hard Disk.

I am really angry with patetic quality last Seagate Hard Disks. And no service upgrade for fix problems for ST1000DM003 users with firmware CC4D.... is a bad joke.

Greetings

Sorry for my poor English.
