I originally bought two ST2000DM001 - one of them died after 24 hours and had it replaced and I noticed the other one making the strange click/squeek/chirp sound. I left it for a while and bought two more disks to complete my RAID 10 array.
The sound persisted with the occasional system pause. I notified the store's service centre and they advised me to return it for testing and possible replacement.
I pulled the drive, ready to return it, and noticed the sound continued from the other drives.
I've now disabled the Spindown Idle Disk in the raid controller, but the sound persists.
Happening every few minutes. Just got 4 in a row as I am typing this - probably one for each disk.
If this can be fixed with firmware, then Please, make it available.

Dear guys at Seagate,
PLEASE give us a way to permanently diasble APM!
The chirp noise is unbearable and APM has no use for a 3,5" HDD.
so PLEASE give us a FW update with APM disabled or let us disable APM via SeaTools.
THANKS!

I really can't understand it!
How sick minds have to be the responsible people at Seagate cripling good product with this UNWANTED and HARMFUL `feature`....
(
It's not more or less than a perversion to torture own customers with these sounds and not allow them to TURN IT OFF for gosh's sakes!!!
(maybe some infiltrated WD agents ;o)

Went through the rigmarole of registering on this site just to say me too.
What a stupid thing Seagate has done here! ![]()
The intermittent screeching/clicking/chirping noise is such a nuisance. I've had the ST2000DM001 drive installed for a week, but I can't take the irritating and annoying noise anymore. I'm sending this drive back and getting something else from another manufacturer.
Hope that those of you who are prepared to wait eventually get acknowledgement and a firmware fix.
Best of luck.

But this harddrive is sold half year or more !!!!!
Some firmware upgrades already out - none of them allows to disable APM ![]()
It doesn't look that new firmware fixing this F..KING NOISE will arrive
Some sadistic person (persons) at Seagate is very happy - torturing millions customers so long time....

I second the motion. The sound is annoying as heck.
Please disable APM or at least make it less aggressive.

Have to ask for your patience in this ppl, don't let it develop into a union meeting in the threads, I understand how you feel and I can assure you the whole thing is being addressed even if it doesn't appear to be.
Thx.

I to, would like to see a firmware release for this problem.
Not sure if my problem is unique, but before the chirp sound, my pc seems to pause/lag for a few seconds, before it does it
This happens a lot during the day, especially if open a program or game which accesses data on this particular drive.
