Re: Please Help for Sata ST31000528AS

Thanks for your reply, let me  described you in my existing post my PCB got damaged due to wrong 4 pin power connector, for this i had contact my local vendor he told me the power chip of PCB is damaged so he replace the power chip to same one (i don't know which part we called power chip ), then my hard drive got the power it's connected successfully & it's shown in windows also, but when i PC is restarted then my hard drive make click noise and it's not connected in BIOS or Windows. that's the whole story.

Re: Please Help for Sata ST31000528AS

"Power chip" doesn't make any sense to me either. However, the clicking noise sounds like an internal problem, possibly preamp damage. :-(

It would help to see photos of the component sides of the original and replacement boards. I would also like to see the label of the drive (to compare date codes on the components against the HDD's date of manufacture).

As for the 4-pin power connector, if it is the mini-DIN type, then there are two common pinouts. If you choose the incorrect one, as you appear to have done, then +12V will be applied to the drive's +5V input, resulting in damage to the 5V TVS diode and its series inductors.

This board has been damaged by such an overvoltage:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST31000528AS_TVS.jpg

The damage to the inductor(s) is not easily visible. However you can see a blister in the diode.

Here is what happens when there has been an overvoltage on the +12V supply:

Another possibility is that the mini-DIN connector has reversed the polarity of one or more of the power supplies, in which case the damage could have occurred at either, or both, DC inputs.

Re: In case of pream damage

A damaged preamp necessitates a head stack replacement. That's a relatively major job.

See http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

... and http://hddguru.com/articles/2006.02.17-Changing-headstack-Q-and-A

If you want me to help you any further, then I need to see some photos. If you don't have a camera, then a scanner may suffice. In fact I get better results with my Canon scanner than most people do with a camera.

[ Edited ]

Hello fzabkar, I have problem with my seagate ST31000528AS

Barracuda 7200. 12
S/N [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.]
ST 31000528AS
P/N 9SL154 - 301
Firmware CC35
board 100536501 REV A

the problem is my harddrive motor cann't run - so the harddisk cann't detect by my motherboard.

Nothing Diode TVS burn at that board.
I already try to remove the TVS but still cann't run the motor, i try to change with other same type harddisk but different revision type board, my harddisk motor run but i hear sound tik tik tik, looks like the head cann't run.

i got another harddrive with type

Barracuda 7200. 12
S/N [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.]
ST 31000528AS
P/N 9SL154 - 568
Firmware CC38
board 100536501 REV A

can i switch the board to running my harddisk again ?

Thanks

Re: Please Help for Sata ST31000528AS

Most modern HDDs store unique, drive specific "adaptive" information in a serial EEPROM chip. This chip, or its contents, needs to be transferred from patient to donor.

See the circled 8-pin component in this photo:

Re: Please Help for Sata ST31000528AS

You need to transfer the serial flash memory chip, but otherwise the boards appear compatible.

Here is a complete solution, including firmware transfer, for US$50:
