Situations where I have seen a freeze:

- low bandwidth web download.

- MythTV (every 15-20 minutes of playback).

Situations that worked:

- Copying 500+ GB between two machines (both with these 1.5TB drives) across a Gigabit network - no freeze.

Also Seatools 2.07 Bootable ISO DOS doesn't detect these drives. Tried with 2 different sata controllers.

Were either of those controllers non-RAID?

(By the way, RAID = Redundant Array of Independent Drives.)

Both were non-raid. Even the "rock-solid" MB integrated sil3114 didn't find it. Bios finds it ok. OS boots ok, and finds the drive.

I've used MaxBlast or similar tool earlier with my Maxline III drives in this system. Also dload.exe did work fine on this system.

So is 1.5Tb worth of data good reason for using RAID? (or in my case 5TiB) Ofcourse I need back-up strategy, and this would be IT! I would like to mirror my valuable data to these drives

Non RAID controller.

Tested with 2 x 1.5TB drives on built-in SATA controller (AMD 780G chipset) - freeze problem observed.

Tested with 1 x 1.5TB drive on built-in SATA controller (AMD 780G chipset) - freeze problem observed.

Tested with 1 x 1.5TB drive on PCI-E Silicon Image SATA controller (installed only for this test) - freeze problem observed.

Each time I checked the dmesg log and confirmed it was due to the hard drive sub-system reporting a timeout error executing a cache-flush command.

When speaking of raid here, I'm speaking of linux software raid, but the problem isn't caused by raid, but it's effects are even more painful, as instead of a 20-30s freeze, you get a freeze plus rebuild-time.

Other reports of this symptom on different operating systems:

"My Seagate model S31500341AS firmware SD17 will freeze up for about a minute at apparently random times during media playback over windows file sharing. I've tried two different computers both with Vista."

"Unusable for media or any other near real time use. Every 5-10 minutes, the drives will stop responding for a period of time (10-30 seconds). Data is not lost, but it's useless for playing back media files."

"I experience hanging/lagging/freezing every few minutes that lasts for 30 seconds or so. I installed one in my Mac Pro and tested it thoroughly with Drive Genius 2... no problems. If you try to stream audio or video from it though, it locks up as described above."

Log entry from the Mac:

"Sep 28 23:50:34 COMPUTER_NAME kernel[0]: jnl: disk3s2: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5"

Yes no problem at all with seatools 2.07, downloaded the DOS version.

Ran it on an onboard Intel SATA controller.

FYI: "DRI (data robotics inc.) has been advised by Seagate that they are working on a firmware update for the 1.5TB drives that fixes some bugs. Hopefully this will fix the drive failings. No idea yet about how drive firmware will be updated."
