Re: Problems with 1.5TB drive and Ubuntu Hardy

The answer from support was not that promising tho.

--------

"Hello Sin,

If the drives are working fine but when you are trying to do anything out side of the net work it is resetting the ports you are looking at you operating system. Unfortunately, we do not support Linux.

Best Regards,
Dora "

I'm trying really hard to not be disrespectful, as I know how support centers are run, but it's quite frustrating to have this wall denying all access to anyone that actually has a clue of what's going on.

I can still return the drives with no questions asked, so it's crucial to know if a firmware fix is coming or not, so I can decide to keep them or not, before that window of opportunity is closed.

I have heard that sentece too :smileyhappy: my response: I don't want Linux support, I want my hardware to work! btw. there is a news on Slashdot Hardware section about these drives. I wonder if there's someone using Linux on Slashdot?

What a completely useless response!  Wow.  If there are multiple reports of firmware development why haven't we heard about it?

Re: Problems with 1.5TB drive and Ubuntu Hardy

I have 3x ST31500341AS SD17, I can confirm this problem on a computer running debian with kernel 2.6.26.

Seagate technicians please investigate if Seagate will fix this problem with cache or not.

I still have a 1 week window to return the drives.

Hi there.

I am suffering from the same problem, constant freezes (of up to 30 seconds) on the 1.5TB drives.

Model Number:       ST31500341AS

Firmware Revision:  SD17

And the problem is not just under Linux, its in Vista too.

I have tried the drive in the following configurations and they all exhibit the freezing problem:

Motheboard on-board SATA controller, non-raid
PCI-Express SATA controller, non-raid and raid
Swapping SATA cables
Swapping Power supplies
Running on Linux Ubuntu 2.6.24
Running on Vista 64 Bit Home Premium

The problem exhibits itself really quickly while watching recorded TV shows.

On Linux I can get red of the problem by disabling write cache on the drive, on Vista I don't know how to fix it.

EDIT: This seems to be a much bigger problem, there are reports of problems with this drive in Macs, PC's, NAS devices, you name it:

Netgear ReadyNAS (They removed it from their compatibility list after user complaints): http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=20435&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

So lets hope this gets resolved soon!

I resolved it!  Newegg took back all four of the defective 1.5TB drives and I ordered some alternative drives from a competitor to Seagate.  Hooray for troubleshooting!

Guess that'll be my solution aswell, unless someone steps up and take responsibility.

Wonder where is the fairness of Seagate! I would understand, if they say that they are working for a fix. But NO, they are going the wrong way: "hopefully nobody will notice". But we do notice! Take responsibility and answer for your customers!

I have been experiencing the freezing problem on my ST31500341AS firmware SD17, but in Vista streaming movies from Windows Vista to my HTPC (also Vista) using windows file sharing. I tried the drive in two different Vista installations - one on an AMD platform, the other an Intel platform to try and prove it was not my motherboard or drivers to blame. When the drive freezes up, the HDD activity LED is lit solid and the computer continues to function as long as you don't try to access the drive.

I tried to disable write caching in Vista, but every time I'd clear the checkbox, it would be checked again next time I opened the dialog. When I disabled write caching and rebooted, I the system would hang during boot, and would not even boot to safemode (hung at crcdisk.dll or similar).

I then did a fresh install of Windows XP and found the problem did not exist. So it sounds to me like Linux, Mac OSX and Vista are three confirmed operating systems that show the problem.

When I applied for an RMA from Newegg, they want to charge me a 15% restocking fee. Did you guys have to pay that? I'm really down on Seagate since I bought this 1.5TB drive to hold the data from my 750GB seagate that just died. That 750GB had the infamouse AAK firmware that made it slow. At least they replaced it with the AAC firmware when I sent it in for warranty repair.
