I'm not a lover of greenies either, there is a substantial price difference between a 5900 and a 7200 rpm drive so one could assume the quality isn't there either, for those using them in enclosures and docks the clicking could be the external or dock doing it if the power isn't instantanious, one way to rule this out is to either have it powered on at boot time, or slave it bare, if the clicking isn't there it's the connection method that is at fault.

Hello, I am also experiencing a problem of the ST2000DL003-9VT166 periodically clicking while idle.
The drive emits a single click as often as every 1 minute, and only while idle. The clicking even occurs with the drive disconnected from the motherboard, or within BIOS setup. The drive is only a couple of months old, and came with the latest CC32 firmware. I have a good qualty 600W Cooler Master PSU.
Is the drive malfunctioning, and Is this reasonable cause for an RMA? The clicking is very annoying and is strange behaviour for a HDD. I cannot find a review of the drive mentioning this clicking, only a couple of threads here at Seagate.
What happened to the drives of the other people complaining about the problem?
Thanks

All 3 of my drives are still going okay, I just ignore the noises. To suggest that everyone that has a clicking drive has a faulty power supply is absurd. While the drives still appear to be okay, it's certainly enough of an issue to steer me clear of Seagate for future purchases.

The same problem here.
Getting this 'clicking' sound every 30 secs and only while idle.
Did try in two other PCs - no luck.
Did try in external box - no luck either.
Seems as a HDD issue to me.
