ST2000DL003-9VT166 - SeaTools reporting incorrect cache size 32MB or 64MB?

[ Edited ]

So I received 6x Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 hdd's. They all have CC32 Firmware.

I got all the drives from Tigerdirect.

4 of the packages say ST2000DL003, 2TB, 5900rpm, 64mb, sata-6g

2 of the packages say ST2000DL003, 2TB, 5900rpm, 32mb, sata-3g

The model numbers, sku and barcodes on ALL 6 packages are the same as are on the hard drives.

I have downloaded and installed the latest SeaTools for Windows v1.2.0.4.

I am using Win7-64bit, drives are connected via eSata cable.

According to SeaTools all the drives have 32MB cache.

What on earth is going on, the above makes no sense, are there really 32MB cache sata-3g versions of the ST2000DL003 drive?

Does Tigerdirect have their packaging mixed up?

Does SeaTools properly identify the cache size for this new drive type, why only 32mb?

Re: ST2000DL003-9VT166 - SeaTools reporting incorrect cache size 32MB or 64MB?

Can anyone with the ST2000DL003 confirm that SeaTools for Windows shows the correct cache size of 64MB or not?

Thx

Nicholas123.

Thanks for reporting your same issue, there is some comfort knowing that I'm not alone.

This is somewhat discouraging though that Seagate's tools cannot properly read their own drive info.

I have tried various other hdd software tools although they cannot read the cache size at all.

Hopefully a new updated version which properly reads the specs on the newer drives will be released soon.

Thanks for reporting fly_sharp.

Hopefully they will release an update soon which properly identifies the drive, or, maybe we do only have 32 MB cache :smileysurprised:

fly_sharp,

That serial number is 64 MB cache.

In the future, please private message me any serial number or other identificatory numbers and I can help.

Let me look into this issue.

Re: ST2000DL003-9VT166 - SeaTools reporting incorrect cache size 32MB or 64MB?

OK, here's the deal, and thanks again for bring this to our attention.

As noted in article Document ID: 203631 there is an issue with how the ATA specification originally handled cache size reporting.

SeaTools was updated a while back to work with 32MB cache drives, and it appears we will have to revisit it for the newer 64MB drives.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've just got mine. AIDA64:

AlanM: Could you tell us that what is the difference between the previous firmware and the latest CC45? Can we get the updater?

I've seen CC31, CC32, and CC54. There should be a difference between them.:robothappy:
