ST31000333AS - What works and what doesn't

Can we please get an explaination from Seagate on which ST31000333AS drives are affected and which can be / should be flashed?

From what I'm reading, ST31000333AS drives with the SD35 firmware aren't able to be updated.  Even if the drives P/N ends in -300 or -336.

Seagate needs to update the firmware download page to let people know whether they should download the update.  They should also repsond to tickets in their ticket system (I've had one open since 1/16 with no a word from Seagate)!

Kevin, thought I would tell you I am in the same situation. If I find a solution or information I will post it to this thread. Please do the same. I have the same drive you do and received an "error opening firmware file" message when updating. I am irritated because I now have a computer on the diningroom floor and am trying to decide if I should pack it back up and put it away for another day or leave it out to play with.

ST31000333AS, SD35, 9FZ136-510, "error opening firmware file"

Terrible way to treat their buyers.

Re: ST31000333AS - What works and what doesn't

Hi guys,
it seems that we are all in the same situation... Model: ST31000333AS, Serial: 5TE0EAWM, Firmware: SD35, P/N: 9FZ136-568

The drive is working correctly for now, I have it hooked up on an Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP motherboard via Intel ICH9R controller (no RAID).

I created a support case about an hour ago, with almost the same description as what Kevin posted in this thread --- I will let you know if I hear back from support.

Btw, if this alone wasn't bad luck, my whole street briefly lost electricity two times today ... those were two additional power cycles which I would have rather skipped.

Model: ST3300622AS, Serial: 5NF1M***, Firmware: 3.AAE
Model: ST3320620AS, Serial: 6QF1F***, Firmware: 3.AAK
Model: ST31000333AS, Serial: 5TE0E***, Firmware: SD35, P/N: 9FZ136-568

Re: ST31000333AS - What works and what doesn't

Ok, so I just used the serial number checker here:

https://apps1.seagate.com/rms_af_srl_chk/

And it says my SD35 drive is affected. I have model:  9FZ136-336

I haven't yet tried to do the firmware update because nobody with a SD35 drive has seemed to be able to update it.

I might take the plunge and try on my drive anyway.....I'll report back.

Re: ST31000333AS - What works and what doesn't

Ok, so just tried to update my drive....again the specs are:

ST31000333AS

P/N: 9FZ136-336

Firmware: SD35

Removed all drives on Mac Pro, put the Seagate in bay 1.  Started from the CD.....chose to install the firmware and got the message: "error opening firmware file"

Seagate is useless!

Re: ST31000333AS - What works and what doesn't

Interesting to see some people with this model and firmware version SD35 that get "affected" state from the serial checker.

Here it says "not affected". P/N ends on -568 here.

The thought of any tech company releasing a firmware update on a Friday is crazy.  Seagate does NOT care about it's customers.

I submitted a ticket with Seagate on 1/9....and haven't heard ANYTHING from them.  Not even a "we are working on it, please wait".   I've never in my life seen worse customer service with a widespread problem like this.

Here's hoping that people remember this, and choose a different vendor for their next hard drive purchase.  I know I already did, picking up a 1TB WD Caviar Black drive.
