ST31500341AS bad blocks and locks up

I have the 1.5TB ST31500341AS and it has started to cause me some grief in that it is developing bad blocks. SeaTools is unable to fix this issue and thus I try to copy the data to a new disk. Problem is that the harddisk eventually locks up completely and I have to power cycle to gain access to the harddisk again.

SeaTools reports various errors: B2AED851, B2AED861 and B2AED8E1

S.M.A.R.T. reports ok drive although speedfan (which can reveal the smart register content) shows the registers to be at dangerous levels and it estimates a drive fitness at 0%.

SeaTools short selftest fails always.

I have been trying to copy the partitions using GPartEd (which uses ntfsclone) but the Linux kernel eventually loses connection to the drive (power cycle restores it, but then I have to start from swatch again and again). I have tried using a windows based tool to copy the partition but it also causes the harddisk to lock up.

Drive: ST31500341AS

F/W: CC1H (no possible update)

How can I hope to copy the partitions without having the drive lock up constantly? The lockup results in the HDD LED being constantly on.

Re: ST31500341AS bad blocks and locks up

Maybe try copying the content of the partition to another location rather than cloning the partition ....  or use    ddrescue  to do a bit-wise copy .....  the important thing is to get as much off as possible ......  ddrescue can do multiple runs, adding to what it recovered on previous runs.
