ST31500341AS not properly showing up in Server 2008 64-bit

For refrence my hardware is:

ASUS P5N32-E SLI - this runs a nvidia 680i chipset

Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU

8GB RAM

Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB video card

I recnetly bought the new 1.5TB harddrive from newegg.com.  When I first installed it I had problems trying to format it under Server 2008 64-bit (basiclly it acts as Vista 64-bit, all the drivers are the same) I ended up using GParted, a linux partitioning tool, to get the drive formatted as a NTFS drive.  Once I did this I was able to see the drive properly in windows as a NTFS drive and could start putting data on it.

I recently did a OS reinstall, Server 2008 again, and when I reconnected the drive it would not show up as NTFS in the file system, only RAW(see picture below).  I have already installed the specific drivers for my nvidia chipset (15.23) as the Segate forums have suggested but this did not help as my harddrive is still using the Microsoft drivers (C:Windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys & C:\Windows\System32\drivers\partmgr.sys) and will not use anything else, even if I try and manually specify the folder where the nvidia chipset drivers extract to.

If I boot a linux live cd and mount the 1.5TB hard drive everything works just fine. It is not possible for me to reformat my 1.5TB harddrive as I have data on there that cannot be lost.

Has anyone had the same problems and could help me?

Re: ST31500341AS not properly showing up in Server 2008 64-bit

Mountee,

I have managed to make a bit of it to work.

But never have gotten all 1.5 TB to format.

AND!!!! i dont know how long it will last from what i have seen on other posts.

Not to knock the drive, the idea was great!, but....

If I broke out a part. to say 1 TB then formatted it, it works fine, but the rest of the drive sits dead.

Only formats RAW, what ever that means to seagate....

The firm ware is up to date, and the drive says it needs no updates, so....

That is what I have found.

Any other resolves out there I would love to know.

I my opinion, and this is just mine, I would have gone for something a little more stable.

I blame myself for not doing better research.

On the other hand Seagate should be liable for the products they produce.

Just a thought.

Re: ST31500341AS not properly showing up in Server 2008 64-bit

Okay, fixed it now with up upgrade of my motherboard nVidia drivers including storage drivers

It's perfect now, formatted the whole 1.5Tb super quick and smooth,

Hope that may work for someone else as well :smileyhappy:

Re: ST31500341AS not properly showing up in Server 2008 64-bit

I have the 1 terabyte Seagate drive and had switched from a 2003 server 32 bit which ran smooth with the drive.  When I upgraded to the 2008 Server 64 bit, that's when it saw it as a Dynamic Disk instead of a Basic Disk.  So then I re-partitioned it and formated it with NTFS, which formatted it perfectly.  Well, now, every once in a while it will loose the drive, not detecting it.  I have to reboot and it'll pick it up.  I have other drives in the system, 250gig and it never drops it.  I've gotten all the latest drivers for the board which is a Gigabyte.  Don't have the model of the board at this time, but will post it if anyone needs that info later.

So, service pack 2 has came out, going to try it and see if that fixes the issue.

Curious to know if anyone else is having the same issue with this drive and 2008 Server 64bit?

Thanks..

Re: ST31500341AS not properly showing up in Server 2008 64-bit

Actually I did the Service Packs, still gave me the problem.  I found that it was a power connector problem to the drive's power.  Replaced the standard power to the drive connector and fixed the issue.
