I tried it twice and had no luck.  The drive wont reinstall its firmware.  It says the download starts but then it stops because its the same version. 

 

And i never get a "DO NOT USE CTRL-ALT-DEL!!!!!!   You must power cycle the drive to complete the firmware download."

 

I guess the only thing left to do is that fix with the Serial adaptor.

I just noticed that the 9QM1TTWY.ATA file is 513 bytes long rather than 512 bytes. If this is a symptom of the drive's failure, then it appears that an extra byte has been stuffed somewhere in the middle of the data block. If we remove one byte, then word 217 becomes 0x1C20, which is 7200, ie the correct RPM of the drive. Is this yet another firmware bug, albeit a trivial one?
