ST3750330AS with firmware SD45 why doesn't upgrade?

Dear friends,

checking at the serial numbers utility, the drive in subject is said to be one with available firmware download.

I downloaded both exe updater and iso image.

I tried both of them. Any of them reports available matching model but no firmware update.

I suppose because the page where I'm redirected for download is this

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951&NewLang=en

and no SD45 fw is listed

Well

Thank you if you post a good firmware updater link where to download from the correct one.

Kind regards

Robert

Re: ST3750330AS with firmware SD45 why doesn't upgrade?

FWIW, an SD4B update for model ST31000333AS is available here:

http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/downloads/firmware/Brinks-3D6H-SD4B.ISO

The firmware image file, 6hsd4b.lod, is dated Jan 23, 2009. This is around the same date as the SD1B updates.

AIUI, model ST31000333AS has 3 platters and 6 heads. This is consistent with the name of the ISO file. Model ST3750330AS also appears to have the same number of platters and heads, but obviously at a lower data density, so maybe the same firmware image does not apply.

In any case, here is the configuration file that shows the update matrix:

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/6HSD4B.TXT

Your model is not listed. :-(

An SD3B update is/was available for SD35 firmware, but you needed to get it from Seagate Tech Support via email.

Perhaps the same procedure applies for SD45 firmware???

BTW, here are update matrices for 7200.11 models:

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/MS-SD1A.TXT

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/BR-SD1B.TXT

Your ST3750330AS Moose is upgraded with SD1A firmware, whereas the ST31000333AS Brinks is ugraded with SD1B. Therefore I suspect that you should be looking for SD4A firmware.

The reason that the SD1A firmware updater fails is probably because the modules in your existing firmware don't match the modules in the update matrix.

;Moose 7200.11 6 head
ST3750330AS MS01__.SDD1.AD____._D__.B___ 3D4DSD1A.LOD MS011B.SDD1.AQ1700.SD1A.B100
ST3750330AS MS01__.SDD1.AQ1300.SD1A.B100 3D4DSD1A.LOD MS011B.SDD1.AQ1700.SD1A.B100
ST3750330AS MS01__.SDD1.DS____._D__.B___ 3D4DSD1A.LOD MS011B.SDD1.AQ1700.SD1A.B100

As a data recovery professional, you will understand the above data better than I.

FWIW, here is one forum thread that has a reference to SD4A firmware:

The following forum threads illustrate the format of firmware "Package Versions":

How To upgrade update firmware SD45 on ST3750330AS

[ Edited ]

Dear friends, this issue is solved.

I discovered that the update utility (the windows exe application for firmware upgrading) that is provided for the ST3750330AS, it is not recognizing the drive and for this reason the drive is skipped for the update.

At the first attemp I tried both the exe and the iso with the same result (no upgrade happen), but I made some mistake and I suppose I downloaded the iso from the wrong link (they are one next the other in the download page).

Anyway, for a bad luck case, I did something wrong with the ISO utility (bootable cd for firmware update).

Retrying the ISO, doublechecking which one I was downloding, finally worked fine.

BEWARE: from this link http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951&NewLang=en , Update Utility for ST3750330AS doesn't work, it does only the ISO.

Thank you for the help.

Kind regards

Robert

Re: How To upgrade update firmware SD45 on ST3750330AS

Thanks for the feedback.

IIUC, you have successfully updated a model ST3750330AS from SD45 to SD1A. If so, then that's good to know.

As for your warning, the Windows updater does work, but it works slightly differently to the CD ISO version.

The Windows version uses the following command line to update the firmware:

FDL477A1.EXE -s -x -b -v -a 20 -h MS-SD1A.CFS

The updater, FDL477A1.EXE, compares your drive's existing firmware against the update matrix in the MS-SD1A.CFS configuration file. Your SD45 firmware is not listed in that file, hence the update is aborted.

The FreeDOS version, OTOH, uses the following command line:

fdl464.exe -m Moose -f SD1A3D.LOD -i ST3750330AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

It does not check the existing firmware, only the model number and family.

upgrading firmware SD45 on ST3750330AS

Thank you for the technical reasons, which are confirming what I said: windows updater doesn't update, while iso does.

For you to know, obviously I tested the drive and it does work.

Kind regards

Ciao

Robert
