ST9160821A Slow/Erratic Performance

Hi,

Just upgraded my notebook (Toshiba M200)  with a 160GB IDE ST 9160821A 2.5" 5400 drive.  This is my second upgrade - previous drive was a Toshiba 100GB.  The drive is configured as 2 Partititions.

Performance has dropped tremendously. I downloaded the hdtune (http://www.hdtune.com/) application and ran it.  The results show output performance from 1.3 MB/s (Yes  - one point three) to 43 MB/s. Within the first 30% of capcity, the access performance varies widely between 1 and 40+ MB/s.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: ST9160821A Slow/Erratic Performance

Hello..  I upgraded my Inspiron 6000 to the ST9160821A  since the orignal drive was a ST9100823A figured it was a no brainer to use a Segate since the 100gig worked well for 2 years.  Well lets just say this drive is simply to slow to even use the computer.

Here are some numbers for comparison:

Building an image from the 100 gig drive to a USB backup drive with ghost maybe takes 1 hour. (maybe 70-80 gig)

4 hours+ (I lost count) to write that image back to the new drive.

4 hours+ (again I lost count) to build/write the image from the 160 gig to same backup USB drive.

Very simple this drive has PITIFULL performance if you could even call it that..

Replace with another brand and performance returned to normal levels (except I have a nice shiny new Segate paper weight)
