Seagate 1TB ST31000340AS disappears

Hi,

I have a newly purchased Seagate ST31000340AS, FW SD15.  It is connected via SATA internally, and set as AHCI.  It is formatted using MBR/NTFS.  This is a second drive in a system that already has a ST3320620AS working fine in it.  When my computer goes to sleep (S3, not suspend or hibernate), the drive disappears on resume.  No errors appear, the drive is just missing.  Rebooting brings it back until the computer goes to sleep again.

Every drive tool that I have used is unable to find the drive until I reboot.  I have used SeaTools, and both the short and long DST check out ok, and there are no SMART errors present.

I'm stumped.  This is not an end-of-the-world problem, but it is annoying.

Thanks,
Justin

[ Edited ]

I am having the disappearing problem with my new ST3640323AS 7200.11 640GB (purchased Sep-12-2008 from newegg.com).

I believe it is disappearing on wake-up.  When I find the computer it is stuck at the boot screen stating no boot devices available.  If I go into the BIOS the drive is not recognized.  I have to cycle the power to get the computer to recognize it.

I tried Seagate Product Support, but once I gave the guy the model number, he didn't know what type or capacity the drive was.  I had to explain to him that it was a Seagate manufactured product, it was a SATA II drive and the capacity was 640GB.

I will try to deal with Newegg to see if I can return the drive through them

Re: Seagate 1TB ST31000340AS disappears

I am having the same problem with my SATA 640 just purchased from newegg. I scrubbed the web and found a large number of complaints about this problem with Seagate drives.

I have done the usual checks:

  • Changed the cable
  • Switched the SATA board connection
  • Run the dianostic tools

I'm betting this is a bug in the drive.

Sorry mate, that drive is probably dead as a doorknob.

If you don't have a backup, take it to a data recovery service.
