Re: Seagate 500GB HD Crash/Failure

[ Edited ]

Sorry it's taken me a while to come back on this.  I have only found two of the drives, and, like the other one, 500GB SATA, details as follows:

Barracuda 7200.12 500GB, S/N: [ Edited to comply with forum guidelines ], Firmware: CC38, Date Code: 10267, Failed: Mar 2012

Barracuda 7200.11 500GB, S/N: [ Edited to comply with forum guidelines ], Firmware: HP24, Date Code: 09223, Failed: Feb 2012

No SD15!

Note: In all cases there were no symptoms prior to failure such as anything to suggest surface degradation or inaccessible sectors etc., and none of the usual culprits: power spikes, mechanical shock, etc...

Cheers, Dave.

PS. I've been reading the label: 300G is an awful lot of deceleration. I'd love to see the testing rig for that!

Can't say for the CC38 one, but the HP one might be an SD15 hidden behind the HP24 FW, you'll need to look on HP for info with that as them and Dell take Seagate drives and alter and rename the FW's.

Re: Seagate 500GB HD Crash/Failure

Getting anything out of HP is a non-starter.

I have left the CC38 one connected a spare SATA slot on this PC and did manage to achieve access for about 5 minutes before it crashed out in the middle of a file transfer.  It's now developed a new trait: if I attempt to access it just makes a pulsed high pitched whiring noise.  I have noticed the time it takes to fail, which is generally not long enough to achieve anything useful, is temperature dependant (i.e. it only works for a short while if the ambient temp is below about 10C, or, in US Farenheit speak: It only works outdoors in Winter)

Put HD Sentinal on the C drive and see what condition it's in. Temps can play a part when it's dying, you might want to try the fridge trick to delay it and recover data. If it's making that noise though it's likely it's dying.
