Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 TVS (?) Replacement.

[ Edited ]

Hello guys my HDD is this:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 Gbytes

ModelST3500630AS
P/N9BJ146-308
Firmware3.AAK
Date Code                           >07515
Site CodeTK
Main Chip #

V520AA

After an overvolt (I guess) on the 5V rail (I guess) because before seen the smoke on the HDD I saw smoke on a Molex cable (RED Color) on the case fan (Red cable isn't used by FAN it's just continued from the PSU (Case fan only uses Yellow and black I think).

With my HDD I had consequences like kicking the fan and shutdown (overvolt protection mode of PSU?)

So, I fixed it by removing this (I guess it's the 5V TVS Diode) but I don't know that's why I made this post cause I need to buy a replacment and I want you to help me find what I should buy and if this was the 5V TVS diode or the 12V or it wasn't TVS Diode ( I am 99% that it's the 5V TVS Diode) . I searched about TVS Diodes 2 days ago after my HDD got burned, so I don't know that much.

Check the close up photo, this is what I removed.

With a Multimeter my cousin checked a short circuit on this "Diode" (?) . so he removed it and it's all ok.

So can you help me ordering the right part for this so I can be safe?

I want to repair it rather buying onother HDD , so I can invest on an external HDD (Mostly for Backup!my Hdd failed and I had over 300GB of stuff that I wanted! LoL) :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks in regards and sorry for the long post!

p.s. First thing I did after this happened , I bought a new PSU, Corsair CX430 V2 !!! :smileyhappy:

Just to be sure :smileyhappy:

I found that I need to get a SMAJ5.0A & I searched on RS-Compoments

SMAJ5.0A-E3
SMAJ5.0A-TR
SMAJ5.0A-E3/61
SMAJ5.0A-E3/5A
SMAJ5.0A-TR
SMAJ5.0A\1

& found all this, which one?

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 TVS (?) Replacement.

If you refer to the data sheet (http://www.vishay.com/docs/88390/88390.pdf), you will see that the suffixes have the following meanings:

E3 - RoHS compliant (eg lead free)
61 - 7" diameter plastic tape and reel
5A - 13" diameter plastic tape and reel
TR - tape and reel

In short, they are all OK. Just be sure you are ordering a single diode, not a full reel.

Thanks for your reply.

They also have difference in

Maximum Clamping Voltage

Maximum Peak Pulse Current

Maximum Reverse Leakage Current

and the length/widths.

Check out the photo (between those 3)

Because of the price of this objects I would ask you which one will fit 100% and which one is the best of them so I can buy it.

the money are almost the same, but I would like to know which one is more "powerfull". Is any of them a full reel?

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 TVS (?) Replacement.

All three devices would be suitable. In fact Seagate has used both STMicroelectronics and Vishay parts in its designs. The three diodes are all essentially the same size, they have identical working (5V) and breakdown (6.4V) voltages, and the same peak power rating (400W). However the STMicroelectronics part has the best leakage, peak current, and max clamping voltage ratings.

Thanks a lot for the reply! I also read the topic you created the TVS FAQ, you are the HDD Master :smileyvery-happy: !

Thanks again! I ordered the STMicroelectronics one, gonna get it and solder it and hope my HDD never messes again! :smileyvery-happy:
