At least one user has reported elsewhere on this forum a failure of a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS with firmware SD81 (yes, that's definitely SD81, not a typo of SD18; I have double-checked) in a manner consistent with the rash of other ST3500320AS failures. Since other users have reported failed drives that were claimed to be 'unaffected' by the Seagate serial number checker, I do not trust that 'service'.
I want to preventatively fix my drive. My drive has part number 9BX154-568, date code 09205, site code WUXISG.
I see on the appropriate page that there is updated firmware fo the ST3500320AS with firmware revisions AD14, SD15, SD16, SD17, SD18, and SD19, but none listed for SD81. When will an update be available for the SD81 firmware, or if I simply missed it, where can I find such an update today?

Support just told me to back up and replace my hard.
their data recovery solution is 125$!
Thanks! great solution seagate! Couldn't think of that without you!
My hard crashed. I used their firmware upgrade and I got SMART error! Great! and they say it has nothing to do with the firmware
problems.
Samsung SpinPoint has got some great reviews.
Seagate, never again!
I lost nearly 400GB of data. I was thinking of getting another disk just yesterday and backing up! heh!

I too am having VERY strange issues with my new PC/workstation with my pair of ST3640323AS hard drives. I've been struggling and failing to get this system working for over a month now (and it is costing me big time since I am using this for my consulting work and I have not been able to get any work done).
I've carefully read everything I can find about the 7200.11 firmware issues and the issues we are seeing with the ST3640323AS seem to be totally different than what is typical. Based on this I can only assume this is yet another bizarre, potentially firmware related, issue - BUT that this issue is unrelated to the more typical issues.
.....
Can anyone shed any light on this problem?
Do you think it is worth trying the firmware update even though the serial number checker says "not affected"?
I don't understand why the moderators are taking every single post that might be related to firmware and throwing them all into a single thread. Issues such as the one that I am having (that are totally different to what everyone else is experiencing) are not going to get any assistance from the community when thrown into this huge thread discussing a different issue.
I have now discovered that if I enable the on-board video and use it instead of the ATI 4850 video card that all of a sudden the system will boot with BIOS 1.05 installed. On top of that all of the data on the drives is there and everything seems to be working fine.
This is a totally bizarre issue and I can't figure out how the hard drives are involved.
What I do know is with these particular hard drives and the ATI 4850, the system won't POST with BIOS 1.03 installed; it won't boot with BIOS 1.05 installed and it BSODs with hard drive corruption with BIOS 1.04 or 1.04b installed. If I use the on-board video these hard drives seem to work fine (with BIOS 1.05 at least) and so far I haven't seen a single BSOD either.
The other strange feature is if I use an older Seagate drive (7200.9), BIOS 1.05 and the ATI 4850, the system DOES see the hard drive (and again if I install these new drives instead, the drives disappear or have no data).
For whatever reason it seems that the combination of this motherboard, the ATI 4850 and the Seagate ST3640323AS creates some sort of catastrophic hardware conflict.
I still haven't tried installing the SD1B firmware on the drives; replacing the current SD35 firmware. Has anyone with an ST3640323AS and firmware SD35 tried flashing SD1B? What were the results?
Note I am still trying to get through to Seagate tech support and still waiting for an e-mail response from Seagate. So far, after at least 4 hours on hold (in total), I am getting nowhere. I have actually spoken to tech support (on the phone and through on-line chat), but they all tell me I need to speak to a team leader since they are the only ones who can advise about firmware for my particular drives. I've asked for a team leader to call me back, but I've been told the only way to talk to one is to wait on hold. I'm still on hold right now as I type this. Yesterday I was left on hold right through tech support closing for the night.
I have to say I am very frustrated with the lack of information and support Seagate is providing. Even with this community forum, Seagate is making it very difficult to get assistance by throwing every single hard drive issue into a single massive thread where it is impossible to discuss specific issues such as I am experiencing. After purchasing at least 100 Seagate hard drives in the past and having previous issues dealt with in professional manor, it seems that Seagate has changed and no longer offers the top quality products and service that they used to.

Is it just me or has the Serial Number checker been down for almost 24 hours?
I enter the serial numbers and 2 passwords and it comes up with the headers like it did in the past but with no infomation below.

Yahyavi,
What type of SMART error are you getting?
Did you run the long test in SeaTools?
Does it happen to report bad sectors or is it another error?
Did the serial checker say your drive needs an update?
Can you still access the data on the drive?
As I posted previously on this thread (see page 4), I updated my drive only to later notice the serial checker (which says I don't need to update the firmware). Running tests on the drive after the update with SeaTools discovered 5 bad sectors (although I can still access the drive and the data on it). I don't know if those bad sectors were there before the test. I am still waiting for technical support to respond.
My drive model is ST3500320AS and it had firmware version SD15. I updated to SD1A a week ago.
I've posted the issue on this forum to see if others have encountered it.

Been lurking for awhile, and finally decided to post.
I have 4ea ST3500320AS drives (500GB 7200.11) in a RAID5 array config in my home server (Intel ICH9R controller). Interesting timing and all, the array started randomly failing/rebuilding about a week ago. Two drives had the SD04 firmware, with the other two sporting the SD15 firmware. Serial number checker cleared all four drives. I check cables and pulled the drives individually from the array for SMART tests (don't get me started on ICH9R's inability to provide SMART diagnostics on arrays) SMART results were "clean", except all four drives exhibit rediculous error rates:
Numbers are, in order: Threshold, Value, Worst, Data
Drive 1:
01 Raw Read Error Rate: 6, 118, 99, 170939427
07 Seek Error Rate: 30, 57, 45, 41224337
Drive 2:
01 Raw Read Error Rate: 6, 117, 99, 141643480
07 Seek Error Rate: 30, 75, 60, 32798942
Drive 3:
01 Raw Read Error Rate: 6, 117, 99, 136530701
07 Seek Error Rate: 30, 72, 60, 39896285
Drive 4:
01 Raw Read Error Rate: 6, 114, 99, 74003142
07 Seek Error Rate: 30, 75, 60, 35081692
For comparison, here my Raptor 150:
01 Raw Read Error Rate: 51, 200, 200, 0
07 Seek Error Rate: 51, 200, 200, 0
Per Seagate chat tech rep recommendation, I went ahead and flashed all four drives to the new 1A firmware. The flash procedure apparently went off without a hitch, but the drives continue to throw the errors and one drive (previously SD04 firmware) now exhibits "SMART events" via the ICH9R Windows event log. Just finished talking w/ another Seagate chat rep and he recommended RMA of all four drives.
No definitive answer on whether or not these are firmware related issues though, anecdotally, it would appear that the old firmware may have been "hiding" the SMART data: array was failing w/o throwing SMART errors before the update. Array hasn't failed yet, but continues to show SMART Events. Rep also recommended calling in to see if I could get the advanced replacement process done w/o spending the $20/drive fee normally charged. On hold now.
So, firmware issue? Who knows. But the rep did recommend flashing to the new firmware despite the serial checker coming back clean, so IMHO the serial checker is suspect. As to Seagate? Yeah, this has been a pretty incredible series of events. Issues are going to arise no matter who builds the drives, so the differentiating factor is generally in how the mfg responds to the issue. Still, this event seems so widespread that my faith in the product is shaken, a big deal since most of the HDDs I deploy are Seagate.
So far support, for my issue anyway, has been decent (other than my first chat where the tech told me he couldn't discuss anything firmware related). My benevolence will be severely tested if I'm told I have to pay $80 + shipping to be made whole however, so we'll see how this upcoming phone call goes.

I was having problems with my hard drive for a week. Faulty video playback. applications /system hangs, ....
Early this morning my system simply crashed, and afterwards it did not detect the hard drive.
The interesting thing was that I was able to boot from hard disk after a shut down. the windows would boot, work for a couple of
minutes and then just crash again. After this the same thing would happen. the hard disk was not detected and I was not able to boot.
reboots didn't do anything and another shut down was in order.
Anyway, I searched about the problem and found that the ST3500ST320AS series would need firmware upgrades. I did use the serial
checker and it told me that the firmware upgrade was not necessary but the DriveDetect said that device was affected.
My SeaTools test said the drive was fine, but of course it was not since it crashed a couple of seconds later!
Since I already had a messed up drive I flashed the firmware.
Immediately after firmware upgrade I get "SMART Status Bad, Backup and replace".
Have to press F1 to continue. The same thing happens after a shut down the drive is detected works for a couple of minutes and
then just crashes. after this crash the drive is not detected until another shut down. reboots have no effect.
