Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

I will give kudos to Seagate support on this one.  They're waiving the AR fee and will verify before shipment that the drives match.

Re: ST3640323AS SD35 disappearing/failing to work with certain MB BIOS versions

HDSlider: I would start by suspecting the power supply for your problem symptoms. The ATI card you mentioned is pretty high-end, and probably pretty hard on a power supply. This can cause the HD (especially if it's on the same rail as the video card?) to cause problems.

You can try connecting the HD to a different rail, or maybe a stronger PSU. What kind do you have? Brand is important... just because it says "400W" doesn't mean it can actually deliver it, so please be specific.

So ... you're happy that you had to waste you're time making calls, testing drives, flashing drives, reading the forums, shipping drives to maybe, possibly get what you paid for in the first place? Kind of like a happy hard drive beta tester :smileywink:

What would make me happy would be the answer to the following question: Does the SD1A firmware solve the problem with ST31000340AS, ST3750330AS and ST3500320AS drives or not?

Seagate can't seem to come up with a solid answer to that question. I'm assuming if that question can't be answered then Seagate doesn't really know what the problem(s) with the drives is/are.

I'd settle for honesty at this point. Say "We really don't have a clue and would be happy to refund your money".

I think that most people here have the same problem and it isn't that the drives are failing, it's the lack of information.

I've flashed 8 drives to SD1A firmware and really don't know if I should use them or not. Right now I have $1000 worth of drives collecting dust because I can't be certain that the firmware has corrected the problem. Seagate has changed their collective minds so many times in the past few weeks about which date period, model numbers, serial numbers were as risk it's impossible to know what the real information is.

Re: ST31000333AS SD35 9FZ136-568 firmware?

I doubt anyone here would know when they'll release one.  I have a ST31000333AS, f/w SD35, with a serial number that Seagate says it needs the update.  The Brinks-3D6H-SD1B.ISO just errors out with the 'unable to read firmware file' on my ASUS M2A-VM and P5Q-VM motherboards.

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

So after having built my own system about a year ago and getting tired of the OS freezing randomly on me, I decided to look for suspects. The hard drive is an obvious one. When I log all the registry and file accesses in Process Monitor, absolutely nothing happens for the approx. 2 minutes Vista freezes. I can move my mouse but that's it. The hard drive LED is solid red for these 2 minutes. Then all of a sudden it starts working again and I can hear the HD work like mad for a couple seconds to handle all the requests which queued up for the past 2 minutes.

My system: Vista SP1 with all lastest patches and whatnot Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB w/ SD15 firmware

So..... since it's not the same problem most people here are experiencing (which seems to be HD = brick), what I want to know is: did this behavior happen to anyone else? Does SD1A firmware address this?

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Hi,

I have a ST3500620, firmware revision DE12 and the serial checking utility reports this:

1 9QM7QCL9 Drive is affected Contact your OEM

The drive itself is used in a Dell XPS 420. Does anyone have experience handling this issue with Dell?

I was having problems with my hard drive for a week. Faulty video playback. applications /system hangs, ....

Early this morning my system simply crashed,  and afterwards it did not detect the hard drive.

The interesting thing was that I was able to boot from hard disk after a shut down. the windows would boot, work for a couple of

minutes and then just crash again. After this the same thing would happen. the hard disk was not detected and I was not able to boot.

reboots didn't do anything and another shut down was in order.

Anyway, I searched about the problem and found that the ST3500ST320AS series would need firmware upgrades. I did use the serial

checker and it told me that the firmware upgrade was not necessary but the DriveDetect said that device was affected.

My SeaTools test said the drive was fine, but of course it was not since it crashed a couple of seconds later!

Since I already had a messed up drive I flashed the firmware.

Immediately after firmware upgrade I get "SMART Status Bad, Backup and replace".

Have to press F1 to continue. The same thing happens after a shut down the drive is detected works for a couple of minutes and

then just crashes. after this crash the drive is not detected until another shut down. reboots have no effect.

Your chipset is an Intel ?

Could you have a look to your eventviewer ? In the system log... You'll probably have an "IaStor" entry if your chipset is an Intel... or maybe something else.
