Hello all

I have two faulty firmware drives, not bricked, one ST3500320AS (…/…) and one ST31000333AS (9FZ136-336 with SD35).

…/…

The ST31000333AS wasn't updated as the utility answered with the "Error opening firmware file" message.

I've tried double check the firmware, a fresh firmware download, different media for the boot CD, burning on the PC (unable to make a bootable ISO…) and the mac (to the results above).

So I've opened a ticket this morning and received two answers, one asking to check if I had downloaded the right firmware with the link (it was the right one thanks :smileyhappy:, the second sending me a SD3B to try.

I'll try the firmware ASAP, but it'll take a few days to arrange for. I'll get back on this.

Back a little later than thought previously, the update in SD3B has been done two days ago only, the drive is up and running for now. :smileyhappy: And the little data (I used it once for cloning a system HD) is there and bootable. I'm trying a little copy test now (some hundred GB) and it works as it should. I hope it'll stay that way. :smileyhappy:

Now at least there's this case answered in the thread (the 333AS/SD3B update done wasn't till now). :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Hi all sorry to maybe asking a question that has already be answered. I have a 1.5TB CC1H HDD. It stopped working, They say I shouldn't update my firmware if I have CC firmware. What must I do? Thank you...

I don't know who "They" are, but if they said you "Shouldn't" you should check yourself.  Run your serial # through the drive checker and see if you are affect.  If you are told to update the firmware do so.  If the drive is not on the list, scan the drive with Seatools to check the health, contact Seagate if you need it replaced under warranty.  If you need more info then read all the posts (I haven't).

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

So BIOS pick up the 1.5TB CC1H

But trying to install the firmware downloaded, it says:

NO MATCH! WILL NOT DOWNLOAD FIREWARE

Hey same with me... did yours can be detected in BIOS and not visible in Windows/Linux? Check the size of you harddrive in BIOS.

And there is no firmware update for CC1H, where did you get that you can update it?

Now that both MS Windows and FreeDOS (bootable) versions of firmware are available, it would be good to mention which you are trying to use.  One might work even though the other does not.  Personally, I'd be biased towards the FreeDOS version since it has been around longer and also because I don't run MS Windows.

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Seatools will not even run for me. After scanning for drives i always get " stxcon.exe has stopped working" error. Even after uninstalling/reinstallation, it still does the same thing. Working with Vista 64

Anyone else having this problem?

As I said in the message before, always specify which SeaTools you are using.  I infer you are using SeaTools for Windows (not to hard to make that leap).

See this thread in the  Seagate Community Forums : Software - Diagnostic and Installation : SeaTools forum: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=SeaTool&thread.id=112

Consider trying SeaTools for DOS.

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

What a thread!  I tried to read through it all to get up to date on this problem.  Here's my deal.. can anyone provide some advice to me?

I bought 2 new 7200.11 DiamondMax drives (1 TB each) back in July '08 from a local electronics store.  model #:

STM31000340AS  (firmware MX15)

I set them up in a RAID 0 array (Intel ICH5R on a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MB).  Was working ok for a few months but after restarting my computer, one of the drives would fall out of the array.  I would 'reset' the drive to normal with the Intel software and it would work again.  (I wish I would have known about this issue back then)  Things got worse and the drive would dissapear more often (but would always show up again).  Recently, Windows (xp pro) would say that one of the drives had reported a SMART error.  And now I can't get the array to show up again.  :smileysad:

I have tried to scan the drives with Seatools windows (latest version) but it doesn't work.  The drives show up under the 'SCSI-FC-SAS' catagory and I can't run the SMART or seagate tests.  I can only run the generic test (Which doesn't report anything).

I used the s/n checker website but my drives are listed as 'ok' or not affected by the firmware issue.  But I did notice that my model # does have a new firmware posted.  So my questions...  Should I update the firmware?  Even though the s/n checker says my drive is fine? (Could my s/n not show up as 'bad' since I bought the drive as a retail kit?  (the model # is different on the box as it is on the drive)).  Will the new firmware hurt my drive? There is some data on the drives that I would love to get back.  Would the firmware update allow the drives to show up again?  Could my issue just be hardware related and the firmware will have no effect (and I should just RMA the drives?)

Would love to get some advice from you guys.. since I would think this issue would be resolved by now.

thanks so much,

Peter
