Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

[ Edited ]

The serial number checker @ the KB link is absolutely incorrect. I do not understand why support keeps pointing people to this. There are widespread reports (read previous closed threads) that drives outside the serial number range are also affected. My own ST31000333AS drive is affected, despite the fact that the serial number checker says it is not. In fact, upgrading to the recommended SD1B firmware made it worse! I have opened a case with support, and even updated it once, but have received no response. It is now two full days later. User reports are that support has a "secret" new SD3B firmware, but that they will only provide it upon request. So I've requested, but they won't respond to my ticket! If it is good enough to be distributed selectively, why isn't it good enough to be posted online for general download (with whatever disclaimer they'd like).

What are we supposed to do? Anybody have better results? I am completely frustrated being in limbo like this.

EDIT: Just to be clear:

1) No response via email or online ticket.

2) No respone via phone. Recording that there is a "problem with call delivery system, please use our automated online tools."

3) Online chat says they don't handle firmware, have to email or call.

In other words, complete limbo.

If you don't think that the information here is sufficient for your needs, please contact Seagate Support directly.  I am a moderator and do not have technical information like that.

[UPDATE1]: Not working either. We need an updated firmware

[UPDATE2]: Ive deleted the raid array, setup for non-raid mode in bios and installed Vista SO in one disk. Seatools "Short Drive Self Test" was not passed on 2 disks. Ive ordered an RMA procedure.

My problem:

I have 2 ST3500320AS NO AFFECTED by the bug (the serial is not affected) on RAID-0

I saw in a It news webpage that every  ST3500320AS was affected and i decided to update my hard disk to SD1A rev. 3 (bad decision).

I did that because at the begining it was announced that every ST3500320AS was affected. Peharps now it was really affected, i hear about users whose serial (apparently) was not affected and then his unit was bricked or became damaged.

Nothing works! Windows has a lot of hangs and I/O errors, re-format, nothing can be done!

Ill try firm downgrades with no luck.

The only working solution (without seagate rma) is DELETE RAID ARRAY and build again and, consequuently, losing your important data.

Doing that worked for me. For any reason, updating  firmware is not recognised i a good way by the dos raid utility

Thanks a lot to people trying to help me.

I think seagate has a lot of work to do yet.

Rafa

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Thanks for the reply Alan. I understand you're just a mod, I'm hoping some users (or a trolling tech) might have recommendations. Note (see above) that I've been trying to contact support, but they are unresponsive. I have to admit I've never had such an experience from a major vendor, so I'm at a loss how to proceed.

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Here's a simple question. Does SD1A resolve the problem or not?

The newer SD1B does not per my original post. Are you suggesting I should be attempting to downgrade? (Note the other poster stated SD1A does not help.)

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Firmware Issues

Hi,

I have a problem with two disks in RAID 1 on a Intel ICH9R controller.

Sometimes the computer freezes, an event says "Device\Ide\IaStor0... not responding" and the RAID starts rebuilding or the disk is marked as offline.

This problem started with the new (second) firmware : SD1A (2D).
No problem before with SD15.

I frequently have the problem when I'm watching a video, listening to music...

The disks are two ST3500320AS, 7200.11 500 GB.

Thanks
