Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB, Security enabled.........

Just bought a new Seagate barracuda st500dm002 500 gb, went to install it in my pc and windows 7 would not see the drive and after a few reboots windows would just hang, but I can see it in the bios. So I decided to run dos seatools and while running the short test it gave me a code "AE9FDA5C" and said to try long test so I did, drive came up with a bunch of errors and it failed to fix them. Well I decided to take a look at the log and found that it says.

Security features enabled

This drive is security locked

High security is set

What the. how? it's a new drive .........  How can I fix this?

Is there a way to reset to factory state or something?

Does the drive appear in BIOS with the correct model number and capacity?

AIUI, the security problem can sometimes be a symptom of an internal fault. ISTM that your best approach would be to replace the drive, preferably at the point of purchase. If Seagate RMAs your drive, then you will most likely receive a refurbished replacement rather than a new unit.

As a follow-up to SeaTools, I would also try a comprehensive SMART diagnostic. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):

HDDScan for Windows:

See this article for SMART info:

Well I've been unable to run tests the programs none of them run completly the either lock up

or can not see the drive type to run tests. One thing should I return the drive to the were I bought it (online store) or just return to seagate?

Hello,

If you received the Seatools failure code, we would recommend replacing the drive. If the purchase is within the place of purchases return period, you will want to return the drive through the store. If you are outside of the place of purchase return period, then you can check the warranty through Seagate on this link.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

[ Edited ]

Thank everyone for the help I will be returning the drive.

I was able to get dos seatools to run twice only the the other tries it either hung or did not see the drive, and got two different codes.

6C9AC2A4

AE9FDA5C

I did notice on the warranty validation page it's only for two years I could have sworn seagate drives

had longer warranties.........
