Sporadic access to Maxtor Drive

I have a maxtor sata stm3320620as 320 diamondmax 21 hard drive which I use as a backup drive for partition images created with acronis true image.  My main drive (c drive running xp pro), has failed however, I have my backup image created on the maxtor drive.  Therein lies the problem!  The backup maxtor drive shows up initially in explorer and disk mgmt but after I try to move the image file created with true image it will become inaccessible and the drive no longer shows up as recognizable.  It often will freeze the computer as well requiring forced shutdown.  When I remove the maxtor drive from the system there appears to be no system problems. However, before I noticed the problem with the drive I had run a chkdsk on drive c (os drive not the maxtor drive which was operating as a slave at that time) and it replaced several bad clusters.  Hince the reason I need the backup of c: operating as the OS (xp pro).

Any suggestions?  I have run seatools for windows which was on the maxtor cd provided at hd purchase.  Specfic tools run were long self test which failed and long generic test froze about 3/4 through.

Are there any tools which could enable me to get the one acronis .tib image file off of the maxtor?

Re: Sporadic access to Maxtor Drive

I guess it depends on what you want to do with the image file.

If you just want to pull data and individual files and stuff out of the image file, that's one thing and hopefully will be sort of easy.

If you want to restore the image as a whole so that your new drive will boot like the old one did, that will be more involved, probably involving reformatting the current (new) boot drive.

But one thing I'm pretty sure of - you'll need to reinstall Acronis and check the documentation to know how to get at the data inside the image file.

Give a hoot. Backup your data on a second storage media.

Re: Sporadic access to Maxtor Drive

I appreciate your response.  Please note that the subject problem drive is NOT a boot drive but is used as a backup drive only and is installed on its on channel.  I need to copy a single image file (tib) from the bad drive to the boot drive currently installed or a usb drive so I can then restore the image file on a newly reformatted boot drive.  The current boot drive still boots however it has some issues.  Therefore, I simply was going to restore the image file contained on the subject Maxtor drive to a newly reformatted boot drive.
