Two exact the same 3TB drives (STBD3000100) - different reading speeds

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I bought yesterday 2 x 3TB drives and after doing some initial benchmarks noticed that I get different speeds. The only difference is that one is made in China and the other in Thailand...

So, the one made in China I get about 190MB/s read, the one from Thailand never passes 150MB/s

Is this a firmware issue? What speed I should expect? I believe it's doing a sequential read (using hdparm -t )

Thank you in advance.

PS: Though copying a bunch of files showed the same ~95MB/s...

It could be that the slower drive is negotiating a 1.5Gbps SATA connection, in which case its performance would be throttled to 150MB/s. A graphical read benchmark (eg HD Tune) would show a flat line at the outermost zones.

Alternatively, your slower drive may have more platters, and hence a lower data density. This difference will show up in the first three characters of the serial number. Could you tell us what they are?
