As reported elsewhere on this forum, at least one user has reported a failure of a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS with firmware SD81 (yes, that's definitely SD81, not a typo of SD18; I have double-checked) in a manner consistent with the rash of other ST3500320AS failures. This is the type of drive I have (part number 9BX154-568, date code 09205, site code WUXISG), so I want to preventatively fix my drive.
I see on the appropriate page that there is updated firmware fo the ST3500320AS with firmware revisions AD14, SD15, SD16, SD17, SD18, and SD19, but none listed for SD81.
When will an update be available for the SD81 firmware, or if I simply missed it, where can I find such an update today?

I have too a 7200.11 SD81 but 320 GB sata II, model ST3500230AS made in Thailand SD81 and until yesterday it work correctly, but today it don't work.... i can't find it in bios, dead... Rally it do a strange vibration when i start the pc, not if i reboot, but i don't know if it'ìs normal and if it do it normally.
I want to know if i can fix the firmware in some simple mode... i think it's impossible to do from the pc... or maybe exist a bootable software that recognize sata disks bypassing bios?

Well, I guess "the one user" that you are talking about is me. I have a ST3500320AS, 9BX154-568, site KRATSG, date 08464 and with firmware SD81 (yes, E I G H T Y O N E). My disc appears in the last seagate serial checking tool as "NOT AFFECTED"... funny cos' it was affected of not being recognized by the bios since december 23rd until january 27th... now it's working fine and it is not thanks to the manufacturer of the disk... I repaired it by myself with the help of a guide that is very easy to find using google and searching for the solution for seagate 7200.11 hdds and follow the indicated steps and cheap hardware. I have ALL my files back at a cost lower than 15 U.S. Dollars. (I'm from Chile btw)
A couple of days ago I chatted with seagate support for aproximately an hour... they told me they were not aware of disks with SD81 firmware failing but they will let the engineers know so they will take a look at the issue... it appears that the SD81 is the minority of the failing disks son I guess we will have to wait a considerably long amount of time. At least if you have one and it stops appearing on bios or it starts showing as LBA 0MB you have the peace to know now that you can recover your data for sure.
My HDD is now working flawlessly. But since the firmware is still SD81, and it is still defective, I know for sure that the disc WILL fail again at any given time therefore I can't trust my disc. So, until seagate gives us a new updated and error free firmware my disc is being used as a 500GB VIRTUAL MEMORY.

Hi Toku, my hd is aST3500320AS, 9BX154-568, site KRATSG, date 08457 and with firmware SD81, beetwen my and your disk it change only the DATE and for a little only...!!! I write before it was 320 gb, but i confuse for the name ST3500320AS that contain the number 320... really it is a 500 gb.
Same disk, same model, same FW...
The file that you have are for this product number only ( 9BX154-568 ) or for all series?
I ask to all peoples to write here in this forum for any news and experiences.. i need to save data into my disk!!!!
Regards,
Andrea

SD81 here also, two ST3750330AS 750GB drives not ST3500320AS but I decided to post here, there's not many SD81 threads out there.
Definitely interested in a firmware upgrade, 'cause I witnessed some strange behaviour with these drives.
I believe it's a case of "stuttering problem" that's been around in the 1.5TB drives at least. I've read somewhere the new upgrade fixes this behaviour also, but there seems to be none for SD81 for now?
My drives are in a RAID mirror configuration, I'm using an eSATA RAID enclosure. The mirror started rebuilding a couple of times (had to reset it) just after formatting the array. This didn't happen with drives of other brand, so I'm pretty sure it's the drives and it's a firmware issue. SeaTools says the drives are fine... had to plug them directly to SATA for the comprehensive tests, but absolutely no error there.
I'm really not so eager to use these drives before I'm sure they're ok..!
