my hard disk is dead. how can i recover data. I Live in India - Hyderabad

[ Edited ]

Hi Moderator / forum users / friends,

I am new to this forum.  am having a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 Gigabytes of HDD (OEM) and it is still in warranty period. But Just today It gone dead. It is not being detected by my WinXP and Its not showing in CMOS also. But I've nearly 200 GB of Imp data (Mostly Videos and project files etc. - As am a 3D Graphics student), I want it to be recovered in India - Hyderabad. Please some one point me in the right direction. How much does it cost to recover the whole 500GB and 200GB ( in India )

It was working normally in the morning. But when I switched on my computer in the afternoon... It was not being detected. But nothing happened. It didn't gave any burn smell, or any sound. So I believe still my data is alive on the platters and 100% recovery is possible. As these are Seagate HDDs and they should be knowing well about their products data writing formats and all. So am expecting 100% recovery at a reasonable Low price. As it is not difficult in my Case.

Details of HDD are as follows

S/N:  [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.]

ST3500820AS

P/N: 9BX134 - 100

Fimware: LC11

Please... Can anyone give me the Hyderabad or Secunderabad (INDIA) customercare/service Number TOO

Regards

Arun

If your drive spins up but is not being detected, then it *may* be affected by a well publicised firmware bug. However, your LC11 firmware version does not appear to be a common one.

Anyway, here are DIY repair procedures for Seagate 7200.11 drives:

http://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix/

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807

Tutorial with photos:

Pinout of Nokia CA-42 cable's Pop-port connector (use pins 6,7,8):

http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-Nokia/nokia_pop_pinout.shtml

See the following technical bulletin:

http://atulchitnis.net/files/seagate.pdf

Seagate were at one time offering free data recovery services to those customers whose drives were affected by the bug. This may still be the case.

It may be helpful to check this thread as well:

http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=ata_drives&thread.id=9756

Although, as you are in India I would be wary (there seems to be some issues mentioned in the thread I mentioned).

In all ur solutions, the first step is to buy a Nokia CA - 42 cable. But it costs :smileysad:Rs.1740/-   and that is too expensive for me. there is an alternate

China cable which costs Rs.120/-.  Can I use that. :smileyindifferent:

Re: Cable is costly shall i use China cable as alternate...

All you need is a cable with a USB-to-TTL RS232 bridge chip inside. This chip translates USB protocol and signalling to RS232 format, but with a 5V output instead of the +/-12V used by standard RS232.

Can you supply more information on your Chinese made interface cable?

Option #1

MAX232 Board, Model: 1104:

http://www.sunrom.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34&products_id=245

"This board converts 5V level UART TTL signals from microcontrollers to RS232 signal levels of +12V/-12V required for connection to standard serial port of PC or RS232 devices."

You will need a PC with a serial port, plus an external 5V supply.

Option #2

USB to Serial TTL Board, Model: 1151:

http://www.sunrom.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34&products_id=244

"Enable two way serial communication from USB to your application required 3 or 5V levels. Typical application includes interfacing microcontroller application directly to USB port. The driver on PC provides Virtual Serial Port which is similar to RS232 port on PC."

No external power supply required, but you will need to install software driver for USB-RS232 bridge chip.

Option #3

Simple TTL to RS232 adapter:

http://www.scienceprog.com/simple-ttl-to-rs232-adapter/

This is similar to Option #1.

According to the serial number checker (see http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931&Hilite=) your drive is subject to the firmware problem.  On the other hand, LC11 is not listed as a possible original firmware.  I suggest that you should phone Seagate support about this.  Just because your drive is subject to this bug does not guarantee that your problem is actually caused by that bug.

If this is the BSY bug, Seagate should be willing to fix your drive and return it WITH your original data.  Note: this is not the usual RMA process; normal RMA involves a replacement drive and your data would be lost.  Be sure to ask for this special procedure.

Please do post back with how this turns out.  Good luck!
