Very disappointed with Seagate, same model number, different part codes, different results. The new 1CH166 I bought has already failed once, so been RMA'd to supplier, however they didn’t read my note about the PN of drive I needed so got to post the replacement back tomorrow (this is turning into a real hassle, I just want 2 of the same model of drive to work, is that too much to ask for?).
Background
Seagate 3TB 3.5 inch 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA3 Hard Drive - Model No: st3000dm001
I have the PN drive: 9YN166 - 300 that is produced in Thailand. It works and has been updated to firmware CC4H to stop the silly noises (clicking/chirping/etc). I am happy with this drive performance stats below:
I have tried to purchase the same drive from other vendors, but have been sent the PN: 1CH166 - 300 version of the drive that is made in China and is incompatible with the other drive in my QNAP 269 Pro NAS as the firmware cannot be updated (stuck on CC43).
The question for you techies who aren't afraid to answer;
Can anyone advise me that if drive PN 9YN166 – XXX (as I found a 302 and 500 at different shops) is compatible with the 9YN166-300 as if I can't get another drive that works, then would consider the hard disk not fit for purpose. (think they are just different factories from the extensive web research i've had to do)
Bottom line seagate if you are going to dump a load of inferior drives on the market, change the model number not the part number.
Many thanks in advance. Now a despondent seagate owner.
Regards, Adrian.

found this on the qnap forum, so suspect if the fw of PN:9YN166 is CC46-CC4G then it can be updated to CC4H, oh great another question for the drive supplier (fw revision) once i've located a compatible part no.

as expected, no response from seagate or its forum users, think i'll be better of not wasting my money on another seagate drive and use amazon s3 cloud backup instead.

Week ago I bought ST3000DM001-1CH166. It works fine now. I have no noise/clicks/etc., but firmware version is CC24 and there is no updates (at least installer of CC4H says that model is imcompatible).
