BlackArmor NAS Network Storage Server

2 laptops, each running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, on Wireless network, both have the same problem:

If I open Explorer within a few minutes of turning on PC, I have no issues accessing NAS, including views of mapped drives on the NAS.  Shut-down of the PC is OK (normal).

If I do not access NAS drive within a few minutes, the drive is not available and the process "hangs" as if it it is looking for the drive.  In addition, when the PC is shutdown, the Windows "Shutting Down" message/process hangs.  At this point, the only option is to shut off power.

I also have the same exact problem. It is now two years later and we have a device running firmware 4000.1211 and we still get this problem. In fact the problem is so bad that sometimes you cannot even save files into the device. If you connect to the mapped drive and browse around first then everything is fast and work. If the connection is idle then it acts like it is not connected anymore.

In both cases the issue could be caused by the type of router you have the NAS connected to. Do either of you have another router to try and test this?

The NAS in in production so I can't very well test anything. However it should be designed to not be dependant on firewall rules. In otherwords connect outbound on 80 or 443.

I do have an update on the timeout connection problem though. In my case the PC's where going through Cisco Phones. The phones have a built-in switch. The phones require a firmware update which fixes a specific problem with slow connections and timeouts. Instead of applying the firmware update, we ran home runs for each PC to the switch and the problem is gone.

Overall the thing runs pretty smoothly for me, only 3 days old so far.

I have network connection issues where it drops out and loses mapping, after reading this I am wondering if it is due to our phone system, running from switch > phone > pc

Further testing...

Connected via x over to pc, 200gb data transferred no problem, changed connection to go through a separate switch, 100gb transferred no problem, so thinking something on my main network is causing the mapping to drop.

Next test will be to wire pc to network bypassing IP phone.

I have resigned to returning this NAS from where I purchased it.

I just cant get it to stay connected on my main network, it only stays mapped for about 5 minutes and then disconnects from PC's and Macs alike.

Has latest firmware, changed cables and hard reset, even rebuilt the array. For something around 1k I would have thought it would plug in and go without too much headache.

Will look at Qnap or Synology, Im only getting 20mbps write speeds via FTP with no other service running, still faster than my current NAS at 6mbps.

Their HDD I still find to be solid, it seems as the Blackarmor NAS 440 was thrown together in haste to get a product on the market.
