BlackArmor NAS Network Storage Server

Hi.

I have a BlackArmor NAS 220 and I originally set it up to Raid 1. But it's getting full and I don't really need the redundancy (the important things are backed up by a web service now) so I want to move to Span (a.k.a. JBOD?) and get the extra TB but without losing the data (which, as I understand, is duplicated on both HDDs?)

I know where to select Span to make the change, but I'm afraid it will delete all the data. Will it? Is it safe enough for me to try? or is there a better way?

 Have no doubt that it WILL delete your data as part of the conversion process.

The BlackArmor 220 is suppose to be user-handleable. What about removing one of the disks, physically, then changing the Raid Level to Span, then placing the removed disk back in?

I mean, one way or another, there has got to be a way to go back to span from Raid 1 (or any raid, for that matter - there are enough disks, after all) without backing up all the data prior to that operation...

Hello,

Changing the from the defaulted mirrored RAID setup will erase any data. Usually, it will not even allow you to change the RAID without deleting the volume first and then creating a new one. So, you would want to backup first to something else, delete the volume and then setup a new volume. Once that new volume is created, then you should be able to put the backed up data back to the NAS.
