Bear with me....
Last week my NAS 420 had crashed and I had an email in my inbox saying that Volume 'DataVolume' is in degraded mode. And 2 minutes later HDD 1 has been Faulty disk. Also no network connectivity Had to cycle power device to reboot after which all came up although in degraded mode. Thought this was great as it was doing what it was supposed to, then ran smart tests on both drives and they came out clear?, So proceeded to rebuild the RAID1 mirror after about 3 hours later that also was successful. All was well and I was wondering when the drive was going to fail again. Anyway I checked for firmware upgrade and upgraded version 4000.261 to 4000.661, that went okay also and all seemed fine, if only... Now all my Windows Server Backups to NAS fail with error " A backup cannot be done to a remote shared folder which is not hosted on a volume formatted with NTFS" I have a opened a case with support who are investigating the issue at present. I am thinking that the firmware upgrade has something to do with it, but it is not possible to downgrade the firmware due to version checking. So a bit stuck at present, I have since added 2 same type drives to bring the NAS up to 4TB and after moving all the data off it have recreated one large volume with RAID5 2.8TB
We have tried recreating shares even nfs but no joy and as we have multiple Windows 2008 servers of which none can backup to the NAS using Windows server backup. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks

I have a similar issue. Have two NAS 420's that are upgraded to 8TB each.
One has the older 4000.0631 firmware and everything works fine. I can use windows 2008 vss backup without issue.
Bought another and upgraded to latest firmware 4000.0661 and this module gives me the NTFS error.
If you find a way to downgrade the firmware please let us know.
NOTE: I was talked into upgrading to the latest firmware by a seagate tech support person. BIG MISTAKE!

Hello,
This issue has been duplicated and reported to Seagate back on 6-14-2010. I am still waiting to find out if will be corrected and when.

Have there been any updates regarding this issue? I have had a BlackArmor sitting here as a paperweight waiting on a solution. I have several proposals out to clients with the BlackArmor listed as the on-site backup, but have had to setup the D-Link DNS-323 instead due to this issue.
An updated firmware allowing Windows Server backup would be greatly appreciated.

I see there is a new firmware release, but it does not correct the Windows Server Backup issue. Is there going to be a release which does?

NAS420 I see that firmware version 4000.1211 is available which has vmware nfs support
. I am still running 4000.261 which was downgraded by Seagate support to get WSB working again. I was then (2010)instructed not to upgrade the firmware again because it would break WSB. Now I want to take advantage of vmware support to store vm's etc and want to know if firmware 4000.1211 will give me both?
