My Barracuda ST 3500620AS stopped being recognised by the BIOS a few days ago. After some research I now know I needed to update the firmware.
Even though you can create an ISO disk to do this (haven't tried this yet) it seems if the drive isn't being recognised then you can't update the firmware via this method.
If I connect the drive to an external harddrive connector and then plug it in via USB is there a chance the drive will be recognised and I can then go on to update the firmware thorugh this method?
Has anyone tried this?

No, only way to communicate the drive is through Tx & Rx pins, if you need to do the re=prog, all details are in my signature in the 7200 link. hth.
