Try the full erase with SeaTools for DOS.
Of course, that will erase the data on the drive.
This is probably a symptom of a failed drive, sorry.

Check the bios isn't password protected 1st, if it is clear cmos with either the jumper or take the battery out, this will sort that out, if it isn't then a format should remove the problem, there are as said programs to unlock codes, but I've yet to see a free one.

Don't send him down that route, get the simples out of the way 1st, I'm 99% certain all thats happened is the bios password has been set, or if it's the Windows one and he didn't do it somethinbg else did, so he'd be best off flushing his O/S anyway, if none of that works then it's time to get techy with it, but I think it's a simple mistake instruction thats caused it, and a wipe will resolve it.

Yes, I think it's a pretty good rule of thumb to start with the easiest/simplest solution and move progressively to the more difficult ones. Thanks to everyone!

Seagate Freeagent Desk unpluged USB when attaching again Seagate Says "No external drives are found." Have checked the
drives and they are all healthy. Maybe I have been locked out of the drive and if so how do I unlock the drive and especially as
I don't know the password. Zel
