I have a number of ST3000DM001 drives in a Norco RPC-4224 server case.
If the drive has the CC9D firmware on it, the front green hard drive activity light on the hot swap case is ALAWAY on for the drive. It's very annoying.
With the drives I have that are CC9E, the front green activity lights come on when appropriate and works fine.
- Can I update CC9D to CC9E? If so, where and how?
- If not, can I RMA my drive to get a drive with firmware of a higher version that works properly for me?

As far as I know you can updata firmware, but make sure to back up your data. I had RAID 5 6TB config. 3x3TB drives, third one was different firmware, so I decided not to play around (I have a lot of information on this storage system), so I got one of those drive http://www.harddrivesforsale.com/st3000dm001-9yn16
