I have been using a Seagate SATA HDD, model ST3500630AS, from the past 1 and half months by Hot plugging to my system using a PCI based SATA HDD controller. It was working fine until now.
Yesterday, when I was hot plugging to my system, the system shut down & I smelt some burnt smell. I removed the HDD & checked it. The power cable seems to have burnt off at the HDD power slot. Also I turned the HDD to check if something has happened to the PCB. A IC/diode/transistor seems to have been burnt down.
I wanted to know the following:
* Firstly, Will the warranty be valid ? Can the drive be replaced ?
* Secondly, whether the HDD can be repaired ?
* If repair is possible, will the data be safe ?
I am mainly concerned about the recovery of the data in the HDD.
FYI, I am using an assembled computer having the following configuration: motherboard ASUS CUSI-FX, Pentium Celeron 766Mhz, 766MB RAM & 380W SMPS. Also using PATA HDD which are working fine.
