Clone question

I have a 320gig seagate drive and i was planning on backing it up with another internal 320gig seagate drive.
Would the best method of backing up the entire drive be clonning it? If I cloned my old 320 gig onto the new 320 gig drive would the clone also copy the free space and thus making the new cloned disk unusable? The reason Im saying this is beacause the old drive has 250 gigs of free space.

Im runnin vista

thanks

Re: Clone question

no i am pretty sure that discwizard will make an image of just the data that the drive has in it and not the whole partition, so the size of that image file is the same or smaller size

Re: Clone question

I have bought a  new Seagate 250gb hard drive with the Idea of moving all of my programs, data and the O.S. I`m running Windows XP home edtion. The reason is because the H/D in my computer seems to be playing up, and I want to move every thing onto my new H/D before some thing drastic happens. Today I`ve downloaded "DiscWizard" onto my computer H/D. Now do I install "DiscWizard" to my new H/D then transfer all my programs, data and O.S to the new H/D?  As new can read I am no computer wizard,so who ever replies please keep it simple.
Very many thanks.

Re: Clone question

Hello Melonade.

Many thanks for your reply.
I`ve printed out your recomended artical. I must say that it seems very simple to make a new image onto my new H/D, thankyou.
But now I have another worry which was pointed out to me by my daughter. Both my daughter and I have photos and some documents already on the new H/D. By me making a new image of my data,o.s ect, to the new H/D do you think it will over write our pics ect?
Again many thanks.
Italo.

Re: Clone question

i think you can just make the image and save it on your hard drive somewhere, it won't write over anything, or it shouldnt as far as i know

you can just put that image in its own folder or something

Re: Clone question

Hi Melonade.
I`ve finally installed DiscWizard.
I went into "My Computer" to  see if the file had been created but I don`t get the window as shown in the print out. But I do get, when I go into the new H/D, an Icon with the legend "Slice Fri Jun 13.08  21/25/08" which is the date created. On clicking on this icon I get a further image which shows a little H/D with C:. I take it that this is the copied H/D. I told you I`m not up in computers. Clicking on it opens and shows a load of things, to me it looks as if it has worked, though it didn`t take long I suppose about 20-25 mins..
Again many thanks for your help.
Italo.

P.S my computer has been making funny clicking noises to day.
