This was a birthday present for my husband. He loved it. It died today. Computers don't recognize the drive, connected via firewire or USB. There is a clicking noise and no light. I am dead set on recovering his data, even though I have this sinking feeling that no good will come out of it. There are no screws on the case either. Is there any hope to recover the data and get the money back?
I just wanted to make him happy.
Seagate fails.

that stinks
there are alot of posts on this forum about opening the case of external drives, so i would go about doing some searches on variations on that theme here

Going to go through the steps and talk to seagators first and see how that goes. Opening the case is a last resort. Two hundred bucks down the drain.

from reading thru posts sounds like we're sol without spending 300 on recovery.
fortunately i don't have too much on mine but sounds like we need to buy a second one to back up the the first one.
i'm very disappointed. i went with sg cause of the 5 year warranty thinking it was more robust - ulitmately i guess it's just cheaper to build poor quality and just replace them often.
note that the replacement unit is refurbished rather than NEW

Maybe you should try what I did to recover your data:

Basically unplug it from the mains and reposition you drive on its back if it was standing and then plug it in. See if it helps. Good luck.
