2 month old Seagate external drive not working, making clicking noises

[ Edited ]
I purchased a 500GB external Segate drive about 2 months ago and it suddenly is not recognized and is making clicking noises.  I am afraid it is dead as I have tried everything I can think of with no luck.  Has anyone had similar problems or can someone point me in the right direction? I am very unimpressed at how long this lasted if true.
Thanks

I've got the same problem. It all of a sudden stopped working and is no longer recognized by my computer, whether I'm looking in "my computer" or "diskmanagement." The light is on and the power source is fine, but I too get the sporadic beeping-like noise. This sucks.

Re: 2 month old Seagate external drive not working, making clicking noises

Based on what I have heard, you guys might still be able to fix this with a newer power source.  Mine is doing the same thing, but is not making any noises, so I cannot imagine what is wrong with mine, and this is after only 8 days.  This REALLY sucks.  If I cannot get this thing working, I have lost over 120 bucks, 500 gigs of extra space and also over 100 gigs of valuable data.  This thing came with a 5 year limited warranty though, so I hope I can at least get a replacement.  I would rather get this one working.

I had the same issue with my seagate after it tipped over one day... I had weird buzzing/beeping sounds as the read head may have slammed  into the platter but the drive didn't fall.. it tipped over onto my mouse pad.. hardly a disabling force but iI guess good enough to destroy thiese POS.  500gb gone to waste 400gigs of my work lost... I had backups on another seagate and before I could back it up yet again that one failed too... Seagate replaced the drives under warranty with refurbished drives which I've had for a good month and a half and surprise.. one has failed already....   and so much for 5 year warranty.. they replace your drive with a refurbished peice of garbage that has a 90day warranty... I should've just made my own external drives using cases and regular HD's... I will never purchase another seagate product ever... and I used to swear by them ever since there SCSI 4gb Barracuda drives from the 90's...

Re: 2 month old Seagate external drive not working, making clicking noises

I'm having a similar issue - my drive isn't recognized by the computer and usually when it hooks up it makes clicking noises.  From what I have seen, the clicking is because the drive isn't getting enough power, but I'm not totally sure about that. I don't want the product replaced, I just want to recover and transfer my data to a more secure source.  Any suggestions?

Re: 2 month old Seagate external drive not working, making clicking noises

A few months ago I lost some irreplacable data when a Seagate Maxtor Black Armor 320 gb drive went down.  Just to be on the safe side, I bought a Seagate Maxtor Black Armor 320 to replace it and a Seagate Expansion Portable Drive 500 gb to back up the back Black Armor.  Both have just gone down.  As with the first drive I don't doubt Seagate will ask for  more than I can afford in order to recover the data.  I'm numb at the moment - haven't taken in the significance of all the data I've lost.  If only I had known the drives are this unreliable, I would have at least bought from a mix of manufacturers.  I have a non-portable 1TB drive from Seagate for home use as well.  Had not started using it.  Not worth the risk is it?
